The Battle Cruiser turned himself into a 3 speed by breaking the 4th gear finger on the drum shifter plate. This for the second time in a year. Any one out there know of a super strong plate or a fix to keep it from fragging itself?

Hey Papa Gino,
I've not taken this part apart, so I don't know how thick that plate is? I've heard that it's still available from Yamaha. I would think if you had a drill press, that you could fabricate a replacement out of some metal plate stock!?

This is the second time in a year I fragged one. I was thinking the same thing as far as plate stock goes, but I think there would need to be some maching done to keep the clearences correct for each of the pins since they are different lengths. I got lucky this time, both the broken tit and the pin were in the side cover. Had to drop the pan last time.Papa Gino

Is anyone out there an engineer? I cannot figure out why the 4rth and 5th Gear pins on the shifting drum are longer and held in by the two fragile fingers of the plate instead of being held down but the must sturdier washer like surface of it. Is it because of stress, the theroy being it would be better to break a finger and lose a piin than transmit vibration or shock from upper gear shifting? Doesn't make sense to me.
Anyone know of a reason that I couldn't replace the number 4 and 5 pins with pins like 1 through 3 and then use a washer to hold em all in?Papa Gino
