  • Spare XS1100SF Frame???

Hey, all. I was riding my bike home last night around midnight, and something didn't feel right. The handlebars were moving every time I accellerated or slowed down. It turns out my frame has cracked really badly. The downtubes that support the engine have cracked away from the triple tree. What a nightmare. The bike has no rust, so I can only assume this is a result of the accident I was in last January.

I love my bike. It's my daily transportation to work. I need to fix it. Anyone have a line on a '79 Special (xs1100sf) frame or parts bike?

      Hey Hollywood,

You're in LA, I'm sure you can find a bike shop that can reweld it, and probably add some reinforcing brackets/braces to it!!! And probably be easier and cheaper than trying to transfer everything to another frame!!

I don't know about welding it... the break is pretty severe. It's like the bottom half of the steering head broke away from the frame... I'll try to get a pic. There's a 2-inch gap in the frame now. I'm thinking that, even to have it welded, I'll have to strip it down to the frame anyway. Definitely the front end will have to come off, and it seems to me like the engine would need to be out to access the spot where the break is.

Has anyone had this problem and fixed it? Got any pics?

I have a spare 79SF frame but do not have a title for it. Let me know if you want it.
We used to weld frames all the time when I worked at the shop. We would cut out a small section of the tube above and below the break to provide us with a better surface to weld our replacement piece of tubing. We would also taper the ends to provide a channel for the weld bead then grind the bead down to match the tube. Repaint the area and the bike was good as new. Some times we would weld a reinforcement bar inside the tube for additional support.

I have a frame from a Midnight Special that you can have if you want it.

Actually it is about 3/4 of a bike, (engine, forks, swing arm still attached).
I am in San Jose. If you feel like taking a day trip, it's yours.

If there is any interest, I will go out and get the vin #'s to confirm the year.

I have a 79 standard with an Arizona title. I think there is a small dent in one of the down tubes from the crash bar. I'd let it go to a good home but I need to finish stripping the bike first.

Let me know if nothing else turns up and I'll let oyu know how long it will take me to get it out.
