Yup here we go... hijack this thread
Fortunately using a gun to protect your bike is a felony, but unfortunately the police will not protect your bike either.
"Motor vehicle accidents, drowning, suffocation, and fires each kill more children under the age of fifteen than do firearms. If you think it is safe to have a bathtub in your house, then it is also safe to have a gun there.
Florida State University criminologist Gary Kleck reports that guns are used defensively about one million times per year. Ninety-eight percent of those times, not a single shot is fired, since the criminal runs away at the sight of the gun. Researcher John Lott, using fifteen surveys from such organizations as the Los Angeles Times, and Gallup, concluded that guns were used defensively 760,000 to 3.6 million times. No matter which side you err on, that is a lot of defensive gun uses, definitely more than are hurt in gun violence in any year. "XJ 1100

IMHO, better home defense would be a battleaxe, and a nice big one at that. Few things have the "mess your pants" factor like a big honkin' battleaxe, among the few are of course the pump action 12 gauge shotgun, but yah, the thing with guns is you've gotta be safe with them because they're EXTREMELY dangerous if they end up in the wrong hands, and it's entirely too easy to kill someone with it. A battlaxe takes a bit of work and is nearly intimidating, if not MORESO if you scream your head off like an enraged viking. Rifles and shotguns are great for hunting, that's why I own a rifle. But for home defense, I think the combination of my scary looking (although completely useless) 75 lb wolf dog and a nice big stick or battle axe or sword are probably more practical, simply because the axe can live on the shelf, whereas the fiream has to stay well hidden, unloaded, and locked up. Plus, the axe doubles as decor.
Dogs are really the key here... Because mainly people wont' break into your house when you're HOME. If you have a dog in your house, people will only break into your house if they KNOW you've got something they want that they can only get from you. If it's general loot they want, they'll go to another dude's house just because they DON'T have a dog - less margin for error. Nobody has stolen any of my packages since I put up the "beware of dog" sign and the "package drop" sign on the fence.
If you're one of the few who people try an armed home invasion with, you're basically screwed unless you keep a battleaxe handy, or your firearm loaded, unlocked, and in a very accesible location, which is something that very few responsible gun owners would do.
again, GET A DOG. Really, they're the best protection around, because they're as much prevention as actual protection. (in the case of my dog, ALL prevention, because whenever there's trouble, she hides between my legs - I am, after all, the alpha male.)Kristoffer

Just claim self defense. Keep a S&W loaded(NO ROUND IN CHAMBER) ,trigger locked with key nearby. Rember, distance between you and the enemy is your friend. Actually, I have a cross-bow hanging on my wall with arrows mounted on to the stock. By the time it takes you run to the shelf to get your axe, add one second to that to load the cross-bow and your intruder will have some serious health problems. A house 2blocks away got robbed tonight. This is happening more and more now days. I hate to say it, but in my case, it is directly related to hurricane Katrina. I actually lock my front door now and park the cars in the driveway. I have a plan in case of an intruder enters my house, and it does not include them leaving without handcuffs or a body bag.United States Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, NY

If you are going to try to use an axe or sword or club of some kind, you are betting that you can out muscle the intruder!!! BAD idea!!! Distance is your friend. An unloaded gun is a hammer. When kids lived here, my guns were unloaded.....they don't live here anymore.79 F full cruiser, stainless brake lines, spade fuses, Accel coils, modded air box w/larger velocity stacks, 750 FD.

My Two Cents... Go with the dog and the 12 guage as a back up. The dog should provide you enough time to calmly collect your gun and load it if the intruder is dumb enough to continue his attempts after the dog goes off.
When I was still active duty Navy, SWMBO wanted a gun for protection while I was away doing my duty for God and Country. She was looking at 'Nines and big honking Rugers. Since we lived in a trailer at that point surrounded by other thin walled trailers, I could only imagine the carnage she could create with something like that.
I pointed her over to the shotgun counter and had the nice man hand me a Remington 12 Guage Assualt Shotgun. I racked the pump once and asked her what that said to someone in the house. She replied "Wrong House!" She's pretty smart, that SWMBO. We got the Remington and she never ever even loaded it outside of our time on the range.Papa Gino

For the most part there are two types of thieves.
1) Pros, you can't do anything about them except don't have anything they want.
2) All others. Usually peeps just wandering by with nothing to do. They will try and jimmy the ignition over, or just push it away. For bikes the size of the XS1100 (or my old VT1100) let them have at it, you'll find them dead at the end of the block.
To stop the guys that will force the ignition (had this happen on one of my old XV750's where they actually got it going, and once on my VT1100 where they just wrecked the igniton key slot) You can buy a remote ignition disabler. It hooks up to your ignition system and has a key fob switch where you can disable the ignition whenever you leave the bike alone. Or for laughs, when your out at the outdoor cafe, leave the key in it and kill it as the idiot drives by!
BTW All jurisdictions WILL prosecute motorcycle theft, but you have to catch the guy in the act, or still in posession of the stolen bike, like with my XV750 where they caught the guy actually driving the bike (less than 5 minutes after he stole it!)Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

I read an interesting theft deterrent at Daytona bike week. Guy left an empty gun holster laying on the seat of the bike.Pat Kelly

10 to 1 he left the gun in it, and someone stole it!
I have been riding murdercycles for 30 years and had some nice bikes parked in some bad neighborhoods, and the above are the only 2 incidents, other than the time someone just vandalized a dirt bike I had parked next to the apt building.
You can't dwell on whether or not your bike or car is going to get stolen. You either have enough insurance to cover it, or you gamble. I've been gambling. I've never had anything other than Public Liabilty insurance on my bikes. No theft, or fire. The savings have paid for half my motorcycles.Last edited by Crazcnuk; 09-15-2006, 06:04 PM.Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

I think a Pillion riding Doberman or Pitbull would be good. We had a Doberman in the 80s and she was the sweetest dog... ... as long as I was around. She didin't listen to SWMBO very well... It ended up being her downfall, Daddy went to Diego Garcia and she bit the mother in law and the neighbor kid. She had to be put down and my heart was broken cause I wasn't there to keep her in check.Papa Gino

The key thing with a dog is not to make it mean - give it love and it'll be a loving animal. All dogs are by their very nature protective, so you don't need to give it attack dog training for it to protect your house.
...especially if it's a big 'ole rot. 'grats on the pup, dude! Good luck bringin' him with on the bike.
'course, when he's still little, you can put him in a backpack with his head poking out - I used to do that with my Dalmation puppy in China when I scooted around on my little $40 50cc banger that topped out at 50kph. Fun times.Kristoffer
