  • stuck front mastercylinder 79 standard

    Hey fellas,
I took apart the master cylinder a month ago and can not remember the order the parts go in. I have a rebuid kit anp put it in according to Clymers diagram but upon squezzing the brake lever the cylinder became stuck in. do you need brake fluid in the master cylinder for it to operate smoothly. Because it is dry right now. Thanks

You should ALWAYS have fluid in or on the master cyl. piston. Did you put some on the seals when you installed them? If not, you may need new seals once again!
You can try and put just a little fluid in, and see if it will retract with the spring.

Yeah I had fluid on the seals, piston and the chamber to lube the parts when I put them in.
Some one tell me if this is right order: first part in the hole is the spring wider end first with this thin metal ring around spring, then the rubber cup flat end facing outward, then the piston w/rubber washer on it, then rubber boot sliding around the piston w/ plastic washer around the boot seated near middle of piston, then a flat washer, then finally the locking ring. Sound right? before I installed the lever on I could push the cylnider in with my finger and it would come back out.

With no pressure being built to limit the piston travel, pushing the piston all the way in will sometimes cause the rubber cup to roll over on itself and jam up. Unfortunately they have a tendency to tear when doing this.

I am a big dummy, Did some reading and it looks like i SHOULD HAVE put the washer and circlip on before the rubber boot? is that the correct order?

The outer rubber boot is the last thing to go on. After the circlip goes on, the rubber boot just slides ofer the pushrod. Take the boot, circlip, and washer off. YOu have the order mostly correct. Spring, wide end in first, then black cap(goes narrow end in first, cups around rubber), then the rubber(flat side out) then flat Little plate, next is rod with rubber installled. Once that is in, then washer, circlip, and finally rubber boot, slid around shaft.
