  • 2 questions (maybe not dumb)

Does the center tube in the carburator come out, like on a Bing?
I tore them down today, but not sure about this piece. It's the one the main jet screws into, and the needle travels in.
I assume it comes out the top. Any suggestions on getting it loose?

Is the oil filter in the bump on the underside of the crankcase?

    Ok, that's three, I lied.

if your talking about the "tube shaped slide" in the carb... yes it is attached to the diaphragm in the top of the carbs. if they do not slid up and down in their bores you best use wd40 or something to get them moving before you attempt to get them out.
Yes the fined "bump" at the front center on the under side is the oil filter cover.

No, I got the slide out with no problem.
The needle on the slide goes into the tube at the bottom of the throttle passage. That is the tube that I am concerned about. If it has emulsion holes in it, they are sure to be full of crud.

On other carbs I have work on these were removable, and could be replaced with different diameters for tuning.

ok .. that tube will slid out through the top as well. grab the tube with care with a pair of neddle nose plyers and lift it stright out through the top after removing the main jets. I am guessing you don't have a manual?

            Hey Dan,

Have you checked out the tech tips, not just the links in the column on the left, but from the MAIN FORUM page, scrolling down to the other forums section? Lots of info on carbs in Maintanence section, as well as repairs, etc.!!

That tube is the needle jet, otherwise called the emulsion tube. It is held in place by the main jet screwed into the bottom of it, dont' forget the washer! There is a tab and groove in the body and needle jet respectively, so don't twist it. Screw the main jet back in a few turns, then you can use it to tap on with a piece of wood/brass and hammer to get the needle jet started coming out thru the top. Fuel Gum/varnish can sorta glue them in place! Once you get it started, then unscrew the main jet, and use whatever you can find that will fit the end without busting off the tang to finish tapping it thru trying not to damage the end of the needle jet!

DO NOT soak the entire carb in carb cleaner unless you remove the butterfly shafts and seals, along with the choke/enrichener plunger, and the vacuum slides, any rubber parts. It will damage the seals, and you will end up with vacuum leaks. Usually some squirt carb cleaner and compressed air is all that it needed to clean out all of the passages. You can soak all of the jets and other metallic parts in cleaner!! The butterfly screws are peaned on their end, also locktited, a real PITA to remove!

The oil pump is under the MAIN bottom engine/tranny cover. That hump is the oil filter and chamber.

These questions sound like you don't have any manual!? If you'll go to the links section, you'll find one for the OWNER's Manual for an 81SH, the engine is very similar to the 79, enough to help you with basic maintanance, oil levels, etc.. It's in PDF format, about 6MB. You'll also find in either the links or product review info about getting RokJok's CD, has manuals and parts fiche, very good value for $10.00! Clymer's are available from many sources for around $25.00. Good luck. Please read the tech tips, you'll find lots of info that will keep you out of trouble!
