  • Dumb questions part one

I am going to dive in to the 79SF this weekend, rather than going to the lake.

What is the spec for valve adjustment? Looked thru the tips, dint see it. Don't have a book yet. I'm guessing .003/.005 I/E, cold.

    Oil: Crankcase 15/40
Separate trans? or is that the intermediate thing? 80/90?
    Rear gear 80/90?

Has anyone scanned a Clymers or Haynes online? I hate those books, but better than nothing.

I know bugger all about this bike, so it's OJT for me. Have not even got to play with it yet, just got it moved yesterday so I can work on it. 4 solid days of bad chemicals and bad words.

It was left sitting with a full tanks of gas, now it's a tank of muck.
Today is dump the oil overfill with ATF.
    ATF into the cylinders
    Dump all fluids
    Clean the tank
    Remove and clean carbs.
Tomorrow: begin to rotate the engine.

    Thanks for the help

Welcome to our world. Sounds like you have a real project on your hands. Your oils sound just right. There is a "middle" gear box. There is a thread that will give you deminsions for the final and middle gear box dip stick. If your tank is full of muck, your can plan on pulling the carbs and going thru them. There should be a merit badge for that job. There are lotsa tips on doing the carbs and anything else you might need to do to the bike. Take your time, keep track of how things come apart and don't get to frustrated. When you get finished (if there is such a thing), you will have a really nice bike that will set you apart from the normal batch of "cookie cutter" machines. If you run into a bind, just ask, someone, or all of us, have mostl likely run into the problem before. Let the gmes begin!!!

      Hi ya O

      intake 0.006 to 0.008 inch
      exhaust 0.008 to 0.010 inch

      Clutch/tranny part of crank case,
middle drive left year of engine (drive shaft hooks to it) and final drive on rear wheel, 80/90 hypoid gear oil.

Clymer manual not bad, Yamaha manual better for experienced mechanic and has more "depth"......

Very good tech tips on the left and guru's here have answered all my questions, even what kind of razor to shave with
