  • The cylinders are off! Woo Hoo!

They hadn't moved under their own power since, apparently, 1991 (Last tags). The bike sat mostly outside with no plugs installed. The rings were a rusty mess. I got off in - only - four days. Fill cylinders with Rislone one day. Use a feeler gauge to scrape rust from between pistons and cylinder walls, Soak with Rislone another day. Clean deeper with a thinner feeler gauge. Soak with Rislone one more day. Beat the snot out of them with my deadblow hammer. Two flat pry bars, one in front, one behind. Up they come.

I realize it's possible no one here will care about this victory. I know it's a fact my wife was not impressed.

I just had to tell somebody.

.. how about a big fat atta boy!, you had quite a response to your other thread asking how to get them off, you might be surprised.
now you've gotten the old crusty jugs off, you are one step closer to finding out why everyone on this site loves these bikes so much.. although you are a man on a mission, i would still consider Andreas offer on that other motor. you will realize success a lot sooner and you will have all of them cool, extra spare parts if you need them later.

.. ok, i have to ask, you do know what a Succubus is, right?

      Congrats!

You got the 2nd most PITA thing sorted... 1st being broken idle circuit screw tips. I needed a bit more than a week for those.

At some point soon that replacement engine may seem like a really good idea. For now I want to see how much this one is going to need. I really enjoy the challenge of taking one of these old bikes and bringing them back to life. This isn't my first. I was very pleased to discover once I got the top end off that the crank spins freely. I checked before I bought it (real cheap) that it already had gears. Only after I found this site, however, did I find out about the second gear issue. I'll check into that when the motor roars to life. Not this week, not next week, but one day, certainly in time for spring.

As for Succubus - yeah, I know what it is. I am not a Dungeons and Dragons person, I just took some medievel history and folk lore classes back in college. I am not the Succubus - the bike is the Succubus. As I dig deeply into the resurrection it invades my dreams and seduces me with visions of flight. And, my wife is sure it will kill me.....

Personally like my numbers to match. Have yet to start working on LG project (work been getting in way as well as another project) When I do, plan to keep original cases.

Like hearing an engine run the first time after major surgery. As it warms up, in the back of mind wondering if could have over looked something........... So far no problems.
