  • Top end stud

I finally got the head off my '79 XS11. Now I understand why the engine was frozen. What a mess. Not so bad that it won't run again, but I may have to pull the engine, split the cases and release the rods to get the cylinders off. If they raised the Titanic they would probably find less rust on it. It's that bad.

Anyway, I've seen worse. That's not my question. One of the top end studs that hold the cylinders and head didn't make it (neither did the head - it got pretty ugly). The stud broke in the middle, so I'm expecting that the thread in the crankcase is probably OK. But I have a question about these studs. I can likely get the remaining half out with visegrips, but I've run into studs in the past that were opposite thread on the opposite ends. These aren't like that, right? Just a straight counter-clockwise to remove them?

And does anyone know a source for studs like this. The Yahama-motors site lists it as a 177mm by 10mm, but doesn't give the thread pitch.

    Thanks, y'all.
