    Howzit All!

Firstly, I have been doing some research on the forum, learning about the XS's niggles. I wanted to know as much as possible before jumping into the job. The forum is a brilliant source of info for anyone with an XS, or any other bike for that matter...

I recently purchased an XS11, to which I am still unable to determine the model... I suspect it to be 80/81 1100 std (F or G)
Serial number : 3X1-00001230. It's got the large square headlight, square clocks, lots of shiny chrome bits and a small Oil Cooler???? (Don't know if the SouthAfrican Models are different to the US or UK models)

It came with the usual 2nd gear issue. Had that fixed, by undercutting the gears. (the local bike shop-Complete job with new gaskets etc for R4000: Equivalent of about $600)

Cool, went to pick it up from the shop about 30mi away. Starts up fine, no idle, battles to pull away, splutters and backfires untill the revs pass about 3K. Then she pulls like a steam train on steroids and you have to hang on like crazy!!!! I thought that it might just be that she's cold, or a bit of dirt in the carbs, but it got progressively worse the closer I got to home.

Where do I go from here? Spark? Carbs? The idea of leaking valves was also thrown at me. I don't really want to pull apart the head or carbs, as spare parts are virtually non-existent and very, very expensive, should you be able to find it. Usually cheaper to import from the US or UK.

Any ideas what I can check to narrow down the problem?

    Thx

It sounds like the problem lies in the pilot circuit in the carbs. If you can, remove the pilot jets and screws, clean them really well, and use a can of carb spray, and make sure all of the passageways in the pilot circuit are clean, including the three small holes on top of the throttle body bore, where the throttle plates make contact with the top of the bore. They are in the pilot circuit also. The pilot circuit supplies most of the fuel in the low rpm stage. The main jet circuit doesn't come in until about 3k rpm. You may want to re-check the float settings also.

Can I go in from the bottom (Float bowl) or do I have to take the carbs apart?

I'll go have a look on the Tech tips, there should be photos etc.

      Thx

You'll need to pull the carbs from the bike, to do this. You'll need to turn, flip, and twist them all around to be able to get to everything that requies attention. I recommend doing just one carb at a time, so's you don't get parts mixed up or lost. There are some very good pics in the tips here. You'll just need to search for them.

Does sound like the carbs need to come off and cleaned.

As for parts?, jets don't normally need to be replaced and you can make the float gasket. Rubber carb parts could be a problem. 80' and newer have rubber tips on float needles, but if not leaking should not need to be replaced.

Also check for pickup coil wire problem.
And the connections to the spark plugs, coils,....
My bike does that after I wash it with hi pressure water (and it gets wet everywhere).
Check for a ballast resistor, if there is one. Gap the spark plugs...
