    Aftermarket Turn Signals?

To keep the story short - the front turn signal stem that bolts to the headlight bucket ('82 XJ 1100 Maxim) broke (PO did a pathetic ugly JB Weld job anyway). I can't imagine the dealer has a replacement for this. So my questions:

Has anyone bought aftermarket turn signals (looks like Dennis Kirk had a bunck of oem style - but not the stem of course) and has a good recommendation? Will most anything bolt right onto the headlignt bucket after old stem is removed?

How would it be wired (ie brown, blue, black (is ground)? Also most of the sale replacements seem to have 2 wires and not three.

Anyway - please enlighten new Maxim owner. THANKS!!

      Hey Glen,

MikesXS has the single wire style complete with stem!
Turn Signal Lamp with Amber Lens
Turn Signal Lamp with Amber Lens. Fits: front or rear on 1973-84 TX/XS650’s.

      Part #11-2186 $12.00 USD EA.
BTW, good chance you can swap out the 3 wire socket from your light and put it into the new light! Or, just don't use the running lights.

The ones from PNM are not good, plastic, break easily!

You might also take your stem to a hardware store and look for some threaded pipe, like the parts that mount light fixtures!? They won't necessarily be metric, but maybe you could find a standard thread that would be close!? Or, you could find a metric threaded rod or even large bolt with enough thread length, and then drill a hole down the middle of it!?

**Just found that BikeBandit still has them, a little pricey though!

Can anyone tell me which wire does what on the XJ signals (no manual available)? I recall brown, blue, and black are current colors and the Dennis Kirk replacement signals use Black, Red, and Black and White colors. Anyone know? Thanks!

glenng, what I did for updated turn signals was use some 2003 SV1000 Suzuki take offs. My brother bought the after market mini signals for his new SV. The SV signals look more modern and the right size, rubber mounted for breakage, a bit smaller than OEM they look very nice on the XS. Now if a could only figure out how to get them to flash? They're two wire units and want to be running lights when the key is on. When I turn on the turn signal switch they get brighter in the rear and the front goes out and the opposite side front comes on? I have a mental block with anything wired? If you figure out the two wire set up let me know?
            Cheers, 50gary

If you start looking on ebay, make sure you check out this thread I posted a while back. Beware of lights made from crappy pot-metals and plastics covered in chrome.

                Hey Glenng,

On the XJ, the black is ground. The blue is the running lights. The brown is the left turn signal, the green is the right turn signal.

If your replacement lights ONLY has 2 wires, a power and a ground, then do NOT connect the BLUE wires to anything, just tape them off. ARE YOU LISTENING GARY??? You need to disconnect the BLUE running light wires from your signals, and they will probably work!

Ok, duh, just reread your reply, you'll just need to take the turn signals, and remove the reflector lens so you can see the bulb. Then connect the solid black to ground. Then test the black/white wire and the red wire separately one at a time, and see which filament lights up, a dim one, or a bright one. The dim one is the running light, the bright one the turn signal. Then follow above for matching to the XJ's wires!
