custom side covers

Has any one out there made their own side covers ?
I thinking of making a set for my 81 special something that would cover more of the opening in the frame and set of the K&N's I'm running . Would like to hear any thoughts on the subject .

Iv'e got the same bike, but I'm running the cheap Unifilter Indy's, which aren't so nicely tapered, they're soda can shaped, a bit longer, and just about meet the edge of my sidecovers.

Someone posted a note about cutting up the chrome accents from your old air box to mount there, provided you don't mind messing up the old air box, being sure you aren't going to want to go back to stock config!
