Does anyone know if the speedometer from a 1981 maxim 650 will fit on an XJ. My speedo is shot. I dont know what happened, when i spin the front wheel the cable turns just fine. It turn the magnet inside the speedo but it doesn't regsister any reading. Occationaly it will go up to like 50 but just stay there. My buddy and I were cruizen at 90 and my speedo said I was doing 40. I dont think a cop would buy that. As always, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I don't think they are directly interchangeable due to the XJ1100 unit having the mileage reset button on the front vs the side of the unit. However, look at Maximan's thread on adapting an earlier 160 mph speedo to his XJ:

    http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread...threadid=10584

The XJ speedo had a manufacturing problem in that one or two screws were to long and drag on the mechanism. This causes the brass gear to wear out, leving the speedo inoperative. No real fix, but if you get a replacement XJ speedo take it apart first and check!

Inaccurate readings are not ususally the fault to the speedo. The drive on the front wheel depends on a thin plate that has 2 "tangs" on it; these turn the gears in the speedo cable drive unit. It is quite common for one or both of these tangs to break. Fix is to pull the front wheel and replace the tang plate. While you are at it, replace the seal and wheel bearing. None of the parts is expensive and all are still available from Yamaha.

The drive unit can be pulled apart and greased. The main drive gear runs on a post, and it can use a lube now and then. One snap ring to remove, so not a difficult job. (I use a white lithium grease on mine.)

With a good drive plate, greased drive gear, and replacement speedo you should have a stable and accurate speedometer.
