  • Grip buying

I need to get some new handlebar grips but I dont know what size is needed or what to look for in features. Could someone enlighten me on how to buy grips. Any particular styles to avoid or look for?

It's funny you should ask, I had a conversation with a riding friend
about grips just tonight. I buy used OEM grips from ebay for cheap $$ I like the R1/R6 grips $5.00 on both of my current road bikes. I don't use adheasive, I safety wire them on. makes it easier to remove them for service or whatever?
    Cheers, 50gary

Try these. They're somewhat British style but I used to use them on all my Japanese bikes.

I know the seller, he's an aquaintance here in Oregon and a nice guy.

XS1100 uses 7/8" bars so you need to buy accordingly. One grip will actually be slightly larger to go on the throttle sleeve.
Easiest way to remove the old ones is to cut them off. Just be careful on the throttle grip so you don't destroy the plastic sleeve underneath. I use hairspray to install them. They slip-on easily while the spray is wet and stick well when it dries.
As far as type is best.... everyone has a different opinion. I personally like the hard rubber type. I already have padding in the palm of the gloves so I don't like padded grips. Some like the foam-type grips. I consider them sponges (I ride year-round). Best bet is to find a cycle shop with a display or several (older) used bikes and see how they feel.

            Hey CrewCab,

I have seen grips listed with different lengths, but if you'll go to MikesXS WebSite and check out the handlebar/grips section, you'll see a decent variety of styles with decent prices that are all essentially standard sized for our grips which are the same as the 650!

I have the chrome capped cushion grips myself, they aren't that spongy, but are a bit thicker around than the other rubber grips, I have a modest sized hand with longer fingers, so I like the thicker grips, makes holding onto them easier, don't have to squeeze my hand/fingers as much as with smaller diameter grips!

I don't ride in the rain, so the SPONGE effect doesn't apply!

Not that I've ever come across. You might measure the length of the old ones to be sure. Some are open-ended to facilitate bar-ends or mirrors. The have plugs in case you need them.
My E still has the stock grips and my LG has solid rubber grips made by Oury. Like I said, that is just my preferance. There are thick cushy grips, grips with palm rests, heated grips, gel inserted grips.... lots of choices.

                grips

Hey there 77crewcab.......the XS's because of the somewhat shorter throttle sleeve uses a 4 7/8"X 7/8" grip.

I've been happy with the rubber Oury grips. The throttle side grip doesn't quite snug up on the very end (slightly too long) but works fine. Don't like the feel of the foams ones.

.. i have used the grips that Geezer is showing you, they dont look like much but they have to be the most comfortable grips i have ever had and they last for almost ever. i almost bought another set that i had seen at the bike shop the other day for 8 bucks. i think this style is called Grand Tourismo
..this is only one of many opinions you will read here, there is a huge selection to choose from. as long as you get the size right then how you want it to look/feel is up to you.

Are the Grand Turismo and Oury grips just hard rubber or gel grips?

.. the grand tourisimo style grips are a kind of thin hard rubber over a cushion, they are medium sized in diameter and have a natural feeling shape to them. the oury grips are usualy a soft rubber, straight and thin in diameter. they have several different patterns and they look good.
.. some thing else to consider when looking for grips, is how high are your handle bars? if you have the buck horns, then you won't have alot of weight on your hands and comfort will not be a big deal. if you have low handle bars then you will be leaning forward on your hands, comfort will be of concern. i tend to ride my bikes more than i look at them so i lean more towards comfort in this area.

Years ago I used to run the same grips on my GT750 and before that on my CL72 Honda. THey were the best thing on the market at the time.

Right now I'm running huge Goldwing grab on grips on the Mongrel. I have arthritis in my hands and the larger grips take a lot of the pain out of riding.

Guess I'll try them too. The price is certainly right if it turns out I don't like them.
