An interesting thread came up on the allxs11s list on Yahoogroups. I dug into some really old XS11 archives (from onelist.com) to find a reply. I thought the information would be of interest here on the forum.

Here's what Rick Jemison wrote to me last year (1999)...
OK. the 16" wheel comes with a right side wheel collar that is almost 5/16" wide. I didn't use this as I could never get the shim stack to come out with it. In retrospect (I haven't tried it yet) I truly believe it will work.
I went to the Kaw, Harley, Honda dealer here on the north side and found shims for a Ninja (I'm not sure where they're used but they are about the size of a quarter (id is too small but I opened them up with a rotary file) and are about 1/16" thick brass with dimples. I used a stack of 5 of these with the stock right side XS collar then the bracket.
Now the bracket has a collar with fits inside a recess on the outside of the bracket. I couldn't use this. So that's out. then a 1/8" collar. Now, here's the tough part. I had to remove the trailing arm (you could do this with it on the bike but I wanted it parallel with the other side) and GRIND it down almost to the base metal. With this mod and the another 1/8" washer the above stack works and fits correctly.
Caveats:
The obvious problems are the collar which fits in the outside recess in the caliper bracket and the grinding of the trailing arm. the grinding didn't bother me so bad because[list=1][*] trailing arms are available and in fact, I have a spare and[*]I can make the original wheel fit again with the addition of additional shims.[/list=1]The bracket collar's purpose is to keep the bracket bore from becoming out of round (a torque is applied whenever the brake is applied). The collar hold the bracket straight. One remedy would be to grind the collar that fits in the bracket recess to the proper thickness and use it. I was reluctant to do this as it would be difficult to fit the stock wheel should I prefer to return. I'm going to ride the bike some and convince myself I like this mod and the handling is better or at least as good as it was before. If so, I do intend to grind the collar down and replace the steel collar that currently is in it's place with the proper one. I intend to do this on a large belt sander to maintain alignment.
The important thing in the replacement is[list=1][*]bore is correct - the collar bore for the collar which sits against the right side of the bracket MUST fit properly on the axle. Otherwise, it can't hold the bracket in alignment and[*]it has to be hard (I found a hardened steel collar in a auto parts store that works great!).[/list=1]That should do it! You'll be amazed how far that wheel sits off the ground with the bike on the center stand after this mod!
