A month ago I had the frame break on my XS11 SF sidecar rig. The frame has been cobbled back together so the bike can be rolled but it will never be ridable again. I've since obtained a vintage BMW with a ural hack that I need to sink a few dollars into. I'm keeping my Midnight so I'll still be XSive but don't feel like doing a frame swap this summer to get the XS rig going again. Perhaps this winter if it doesn't sell.
I thought to offer these bikes and hack here. I'm asking $2600 for two "parts" bikes and the sidecar. This includes a 79SF with lotsa new parts, an 80SG parts bike, and the sidecar. With some work someone could have a great sidecar rig. Here are a couple of links to pics and if someone is seriously interested I can take more of their current condition. The 79SF: I've got this bike from the original owner with 8000 miles on it. I don't know the total miles since the speedo melted a few years ago and was replaced but I'd guess ~ 65K. I've never had any transmission problems with it. The pickup fix was done a few years ago as well as a new fuse panel installed. It's got a Vetter Vindicator (IV?) fairing. Other upgrades I've done are:
- New Clutch friction plates with extra steel plate - less than 500 miles ago.
- Steerite triple tree modification from Side Effects of Canada to reduce the trail for sidecar use cost ~$800.00 a year ago. I have the stock triple tree still.
- Progressive Spring setup with new fork seals, also has a TKAT fork brace.
- Front SS brake lines and front and rear speed bleeders - new a month ago
- Hagon rear shocks with a heavier spring for sidecar use.
- Heated grips with thermostat - new this spring.
- A standard tank with NEW non vacuum petcocks tho' the paint is poor. Also have the original special tank.
- Brand new (less than 500 miles) Dunlop Elite III on the rear and a new Dunlop Elite III (unmounted) for the front.
I had planned on a new cam chain, valve adjustment, and possible head work as a winter project. It ran well when the frame broke but definitely didn't have the power it had a few years ago. It used/leaked perhaps half a quart of oil between 2000 mile oil changes. I've got a new cam chain and shifter oil seal for it. The cam chain tension adjustment assembly was replaced last summer.
The 80SG: I bought this to restore and ended up using parts off it so it isn't complete. I rode it several times and it had a lot more power than my SF. The engine has obviously been worked on since the cylinders appear to be from a MNS. I question the competency of the mechanic tho' due to oil leaks and the use of JB WELD on the oil drain plug. This bike isn't currently running, due to the drain plug and no oil, but I know it started easily and ran and shifted smoothly right after I got it. Basically I think the best option is to swap the parts from the SF into this frame.
The Sidecar is a Chang Jiang imported by Dauntless motors a few years ago. It is a heavy duty steel car with a full (two sided) swingarm rather than just a spindle for the wheel. It's set up for use with my dogs having lightly padded plywood seats giving acces to under-seat and behind-seat storage. The canopy/windshield is a homemade fiberglass concoction that I was using as part of a mold to fabricate a more robust canopy. Wanted to ride so I mounted the mold. I have the stock seat for this but don't have the stock windshield. For "people" rather than dog use, Dauntless says they have a Ural windshield that would fit or you could fab your own with the included existing hardware. The wheel (which also has a new Dunlop) is one I made this spring from a front XS11 wheel by re-sizing the bearings and fabricating new spacers. I have the original spoked wheel but much prefer the mag style XS wheel. The mounts and struts are included tho' may be missing a few bolts.
A note on mounting: The lower front mount has two steel plates attached to either side of the engine mounts and interconnected by redi-bolts - I trust this mount. The lower rear mount is a steel plate mounted in the passenger footpeg region - this mount is also robust. The upper rear mount is clamped to the frame behind the seat - functional but should be re-located. The upper front mounting is what caused the frame to break being a simple clamp on the left fairing mount. This mount needs a plate fabricated to fit the BOLTS that hold the fairing not the frame tube!!
