Well I ordered up a new set of floats and will install them when I have the carbs off to install the pod air filters. Much to my surprise I started the bike up yesterday and it fired right up and I used it last night and it is running good but RICH. At least I think it's RICH. I say that because there is a bubbling sort of "wet" muted sound in the pipe when down shifting. It is not a popping or loud back firing sound. It is hard to describe. Idle is good once the engine is warmed right up. I have the idle set just below 1000 RPM so that once warmed up it will be at about 1000 to 1100.

That's a good idea and I may have to do that but I am told the only real way to read plugs is to run the bike under load .. or in other words in use, at about 5000 RPMs, kill it with the kill switch with the clutch pulled in, roll to a stop and read the plugs at the side of the road.

Well I had the bike out last night and used it a far amount. Here's what i got. If I set idle at about 1000 rpm the bike will idle at 1500 RPM once it is hot. When it is hot it runs pretty good by 1500 RPM idle is too high. So I set the idle at about 950 so when it is hot it idles at about 1000 to 1100 ( on the tack) This makes the bike very cold blooded when not hot and it is a pain in the back side to be feeding it gas all the time when at lights etc. The bike is pulling VERY nicely above 5000 RPM and is pretty touchy in the lower RPM range but every thing in between is powerless.
When I run at a constant RPM .. say 5000 to 5500 there is no mis fire and the bike runs good. however when I let off the throttle there is again wet muted sounding backfiring in the pipe. I know that this can mean lean or rich but with the dial a jet set up running lean is not something that is suppose to happen. I have the dial a jets set at their lowest setting so I will guess that the engine is in fact running lean ... I guess? and i will turn the dial a jets up to the middle setting when my pod filters arrive.

When your pods come in you might get lucky with your present richness (if that is what it is) or you might be back to tweeking (likely), so I wouldn't worry tooo much right now. If you start it and it runs better cold than hot in the low and mid, it is rich. If vise versa, it is lean in those ranges.

PS, the idle screw is for fine adjustment. Too many turns out (3+) indicates the possible need for bigger pilot jets: less than a turn out might indicate the need for *smaller* ones. --given the float levels are OK.

Skids, I editted this, I believe you meant SMALLER not bigger in this part of your reply! T.C.

I currently have the stock pilot jets in the carbs and the screw turned out 1.25 turns from lightly seated. I have #145 pilot jets coming from Mikes XS with the pod filters. I really at this point think I need to do some plug reading while the bike is in use. I will once I have the pod filters in place have a better idea if it's rich or not. If the situation gets worse I will conclude it was / is too lean if it gets better was too rich.

                    NAILED IT

Well I have recovered from my camping trip and was working on My bike last night. I decided to keep things simple for fastest and best results. I put in the #145 pilot jets and set the idle screws at 1.75 turns out from lightly seated. I have left the drilled out air box on the bike. Put a soft stop plate in the center of the Mac headers baffle and set the dial-A-jets at the first setting.
WELL the bike is running pretty dam good. Maybe not perfect but pretty good. I will leave it as is until the season is complete. Now i can get back to my hop up engine ;-) Bout time.

On a different note a guy I met camping GAVE me a 1100 Maxim FREE. It has been outside for many years but there will be parts I can use off that bike.
