Your engine oil IS your tranny oil (Wet clutches). Use a good motor oil. Look on the back of the motor oil bottle and make sure it doesn't say "Energy conserving" on the bottom of the little donut looking thing. Everybody's bikes seem to like something different. It does no good to ask what type of oil is best. Try a few different kinds and see what works for your bike. Some let the clutches slip, some will make a lot of head/ valve noise... all these bikes are different in that aspect.
Look to the left under tech tips, or up top for the search option, and you will find a wealth of information previously covered on this subject.
Good luck and welcome to the site.

.. yeah what Tod said[and said very well, i might add]. you know what opinions are like... and everybody has one, so just start trying different ones and form your own opinion. if you find one that works noticably well for you, then let us know here and some of us might try it.
..the only opinion i will state here, is to not try the synthetics in these old bikes. the metal parts might like it but the clutches and gaskets usualy dont.

fluid
well I have been using gtx in all my other bikes but on the end of this drive shaft (behind the rubber boot) there is a bollt with a odd star tip on it, when I removed it to check the fluid it didnt look like 10/30 and it smelled like ass what is it ? plus I tried synthetic oil in one of these old bikes one it did more damage than it was worth

Okay,
What you are looking at is the MIDDLE gear section. It IS isolated from the tranny/engine oil. IT is Hypoid 80-90 wt, and you CAN use synthetics in this if you want! Same thing for the FINAL drive/rear wheel driveshaft section. The little cap at the 12 oclock position is NOT the access, it's just a vent, leave it alone. The filler is at 3 oclock, the drain at 6 oclock.

Engine, Middle and final drive Oil
I have been using Lucas Oil addative. In the midddle and final drives. It works well no problems. It can be mixed with 80/90w or use strait out of the bottle for gear applications like this!! I seem to like plain old Shell Rotella 15/40w oil in the motor. I dont know what Shell puts in this oil but it seems like the viscosity never breaks down, No matter how long you leave it in the motor it comes out as thick as it went in. When I have used regular 10/40w oil in the past I noticed that at the time of the oil change the oil would pour out of the motor like water seened it had no life left in it.Dan ( A.K.A.- MacGyver )

checking fluid
one more thing how do you tell how much fluid to put in the middle drive? there is no window nor a dipstick my neighbor said to fill it up to the top and showed me on his xs11 and when he started it it came out of the case breather (for some reason he has taken off the black hose that goes from the case breather to the airbox) but I am pretty sure that it is not supposed to come out like that what a mess
