  • EXTRA WIRES Question

OK anyone with an 1979 XS 11 can answer this for me. I have 2 extra wires on the bike that are not connected to anything and i would like to know if this is normal.

The first one is a single green wire with a female end that is attached to the starters main wire at the solenoid under the right hand side cover.

The second is a single red/white wire with a male end coming out of the harness right at the routing clip that is on the front right hand side of the rear fender very close to the right hand side cover. There are no other loose wires under the cover for these wires to connect to.
Maybe someone could check for me and see what's up. All electricals are working accept for my miss fire issue which might be electrical in nature.

If I remember, both of those wires should be plugged into each other. It is for the ballast resistor bypass ciucuit. That is how it is shown in my Clymers, and it was that way on a 79SF I resurrected last year.

      Hey John,

Thanks for that confirmation. I just went out and looked at my SF basket case, and those same wires are plugged together, however, my red one seems solid, not red/white, but both have bullet style plugs.

But, Rob, I don't think this is your problem, since you've tried it bypassing the ballast resistor anyways, and IF it was, it would affect both coils! Both me and Ken think it's FUEL!
      Good Luck.

Good enough I will plug those 2 together. I was thinking thats what they were supposed to do but the colors did not match and one was RED / WHITE which is part of the ignition system.
        Thanks guys on that one
