OK, I think i've got my head out of the dark place. The shims are marked, say 245, which is really 2.45mm. This makes things clearer.

      Figured it out

      On #1 I need a 235
      #2 240
      #3 235
      #4 230

I'm not Oldcruz for nothing. It takes me longer to figure this stuff out. Now where did I leave my glasses?

Oldcruz, if you look at the chart that MRO put up, it takes all the guess work out of it. On the left side of the graph, find where the measurement you got fits. For EX. On the #1 you measured a .076. On the left side of the graph, that puts you between the .06- .10 range. Now look across the very top of the graph. This is where you find what number shim you have installed right now... which you said was the 245. Start at the left where the range of .06-.10 was, and follow it across.... then go straight down from the 245 shim at the top. Where these 2 intersect, is the size of shim you will need to get your valves within spec. In your case, it would be the 240 shim.

          Good luck.

            Chart

            1) Left side, find measured clearance

            2) top, find installed shim

            3) where two intersect you find needed shim

            measurments are mm, NOT inch

Trust yourself. The chart is for 80 and 81 models, right? There is a definate change for the intake clearances from the 78 and 79's due to the bigger intake valves in the later models. I can't remember the spec. range, be just be aware of the differences. Clymer has the suppliment in the back for the later models.

Skids, you are right about the differance with 78/79. I found a chart on line from our friends accross the pond. It is for 78/79, which is different than the chart above.

Yeah, I was thinking it was a little different, as I stated earlier. That link shows a 1 hundredth change for exhaust, but it doesn't show the intake, which is the one that changes the most. It's here....

When you get to the chart, go to the top and click techencal, engine, shim chart. It has intake there.

                          Got excel?

You can use this calculator to input all your shims and it tells you what ones you need to change and what sizes to change them for:

                          How to use:

Put in you min and max valve clearances for both cams as specified for your bike.
Measure all your clearances and put them in the table. (printing the sheet off helps here you can pencil them in on paper in the workshop).
Remove the shims from the valves that come up out of range (in red), add these shim sizes to the spreadsheet.
Look in the "new shim needed" box to see what size you need to fit for the proper clearance.

                            Figured it out

                            On #1 I need a 235
                            #2 240
                            #3 235
                            #4 230
Sorry, was stuck thinking about Bills 80 Special.
                            You had it figured correctly.

Using chart for 78/79 when needing smaller size shim go down one, and needing a larger need to go up one.

                            Difference .05 mm 78/79, 80/81

                              Got it

Thanks guys. I found the page on cam alignment after I posted. Got the shims in and got the cams aligned. Now while I wait for new fork seals and I am polishing up my aluminum. Got the timing cover looking good. The valve cover is another matter. It is to the point that it was starting to pit out. I don't know if I can polish it out. I am thinking that I might just paint it black and polish the ribs instead. I have seen a couple of bikes posted in here that were like that and they looked pretty sharp. I installed my new fuse box at 1:00AM Sat. morning.(To many beers ) It looks sharp. Thanks TOPCAT!! You da man!

I apologize ahead of time if this has been posted someplace else

but what are the correct valve measurments for the 82' XJ100?

are they the same as all the other bikes or what?
