  • Gas tank restoration

Tank I discussed earlier, rusty mess inside but no leaks, outside is mint, so want to get this right.

I know there are layers of varnish, rust, gunk inside. Took off low fuel sending unit that was covered in rusty gunk. Three days soak in denatured alcohol and all is gone, even works when tested on my other bike.

Local radiator shop that uses Red Kote lining came highly recommended but don't want to take responsibility for any problems with paint. They steam inside and think it may damage paint. He suggested I get as much rust out as possible then use methyl ethyl ketone MEK but four gallons of that is about $75. I figure it needs to sit in the tank for a week or so.

A local station sells E85 fuel which is 85 % ethanol, I was thinking of doing that first at $3.50 a gallon.

Also was going to put some pea gravel or the aquarium type and shake it around the tank a bunch to loosen rust.

Any thoughts to this process or suggestions appreciated.

    Hey Ron,

Here's a tech tip link about cleaning the gas tank. There have also been threads on this.

The tip speaks of Phosphoric acid. An Xsive used DIET coke/Pepsi which also has Phosphoric acid in it, let it sit in the tank a day or so! Much cheaper and safer to use.

A tank liner I used I got from JCW's auto catalog several years ago, was designed to recoat old tanks that had rust in them. However, I vaguely remember it saying something about not recommended for fuels with alcohol. Now, that we are having ETHANOL added to our fuel, I don't know what it will do to it, like causing it to peal away from the tank??

          POR 15

I used the POR 15 on my tank. The cleaning solutions took it done to the metal. It's takes a little work, but it's worth it. It's all purty inside now.
