Fired up Zilla

I got her running !!

But not idleing good yet. Wants to creep up to 4000 rpms and can flick the kill switch to get about 2000 rpms ....

Had found a pinched off fuel line , two bad spark plugs . One carb
had a main jet about to fall off.New battery installed . Not much cash envolved yet !!Have cleaned the carbs...

Looking on a way to set the floats , but might need a nipple to put a tube on the drain hole . This only has a small boss the drain srcew seal on ....

I have not checked for rubber boots leaking or the butterflys ...

A few things I notice is that cyl 2 , 3 and four header pipes get hot to sizzle quick. Number one cyl is pretty warm but not too hot.
Number one carb sucks my hand instantly and lots of fuel wets the hand ...2 , 3 and four carbs take a few seconds then vacuum picks up and draws fuel ...
Not sure what this stuff indicates yet ??
Another thing is I lift the slides up on each carb and no change, they go up then down right away at 2g's ....

But I cranked her to 6 or 6500 rpm and the sound is awesome !!!
Sounds nice an "lumpy" around 2000 , like an 11 second bike should ....

Cant wait to get the bugs worked out , but cant be too much farther to go ....
Any thoughts on what to look for next ???

One other thing... Underdog..... when these motors are tuned and running right, they are INCREDIBLY smooth and UN-lopey. Purrs like a big cat waiting to growl! It sounds like most of the problems there are carb related. Like Prometheus says.... spray every jet in the carbs with cleaner until they shoot you back in the eye! The drywall ceiling in my garage can attest to mine finally getting cleaned out.

You can call your bike whatever you want, but if originality is your goal, then you might want to reconsider!?

Okay, aside from cleaning the carbs, they need to be balanced= vacuum synched so that all four are pulling the same vacuum that way they all pull the same amount of fuel, so all four cylinders are working together, not lopsided!!! The other 3 cylinders NOT pulling your hand strong could be a sign of a vacuum leak....so you should check your intake manifolds soon!

Also, you don't have your model # or year in your profile, or better yet, signature, so it's harder for us to provide specific help, there ARE differences in the years/models!!

The 78-79's have a vent for the carbs bowls in the upper set of "T's", #1 could be clogged causing it to run rich!?

You'll need to take the carbs apart and clean them, check the rubber diaphragms of the slides for holes. The slides rise during strong vacuum surge. Raising them manually while the engine is running doesn't increase the vacuum level, so it doesn't necessarily allow it to draw up any more fuel, so that's why you didn't notice any change in rpm which was controlled by the position of the carb throttle butterfly valves. The carbs and fuel delivery system should be your primary goal!

I notice my butterflys were all closed fully when I cleaned the carbs...Pretty sure they are fully closed hooked up to the throttle cable ...

Oh , they(carbs) must be pretty clean as I did get a shot of carb cleaner in my left eye , whoops . That happened fast . Put saftey glasses on after that !!!Kinda wimped out on more of that "style" of cleaning LOL !!

The diaphrams looked excellent , A few jets were rounded off by the PO . So left them in and got air to blow with cleaner ....

Think will try propane for a leak check around the throttle plate seals and carb boots next ...

Is there a nipple or a way to get a tube to test float level on a 1979 xs1100 special ??I found the bowl has not much of a boss for the drain plug to go ....

Will post back what I find out ....

What do we have here !!!
I seem to have found no washer or o-ring on the idle jets ...
Makes scence that the throttle butterflys are fully closed to compensate ...
I did not know they were supposed to be there , but reading on the site brought that to my attention .
One of the idle screws was bent a tad and when I screwed it down it broke off , the rich # 1 cyl ...Hmmmm

Hey Dog,

First of all, the 79 doesn't HAVE any washers or Orings as part of the Idle SCREWS, just the screw and the spring! The later 80-81 series carbs with the RECESSED pilot screws used the washers and Orings. Now, your bent/broken tip is a concern, and hopefully you can grind down the broken tip to reuse it vs. trying to get a new one!

Secondly, the butterfly valves are to be closed when you are not providing any throttle input=idle. It's not a compensation, it's just how they are. They open when you turn the throttle, and that allows more vacuum and airflow into the engine, thru the carbs, which then sucks the vacuum slides upwards, lifting the needle up allowing more fuel to be drawn thru the main jet and it's emulsion tube.

Also, leaving the rounded off MAIN JETS in place tells us that you were NOT able to do as thorough a cleaning as you should. The Emulsion tubes=needle jet has many small aeration holes in them that easily get gummed up, and need to be removed to be cleaned and ensured they are open! Also, there are PILOT JETS under screws in the towers next to the MAIN jets. Did you remove those caps and try to remove those smaller jets? They, too, have small holes in their sides required for proper metering, not to mention cleaning the circuit from their to the Pilot SCREWS and into the throat of the carb!!!

Now...you know why we say TRIPLE CLEAN!!!

Back in the eighties, we had a band(s) one of which was named "Rodan" one of Godzilla's nemisis. Rodan is a cool name maybe I'll use it. I call my other bike a modified XS650 "Arte Primivito" I would post a picture of it if I could.
