gas tank sizes

I've got a 78 XS1100 with the standard tank - wondering what capacity it is. Are there various tank sizes that were available?

Fuel Tank

Have heard/read several different capacities for standard tank.

Official Yamaha manual says 5.3 gallon

Had heard about a 6 gallon "touring" tank, but have no first hand knowledge of it.

My 80G has never been run dry and most I've put in it just over 4 gallons. One of these days plan to see just how much is really usable in the tank. (most miles before refilling, 138, and had not gone to reserve (needle next to empty thou).

That's right Gene. But the 4 gallons one the Special is a stretch I think. I know Yamaha claimed 4 gallons but last year I cleaned the entire fule system on Kong (1980 XS11 SG).

When I got through I took the dry tank on the bike down to the station. It held 3.87 gallons. I probably could've crammed 3.9 into it but point is there's no room to spare on a Special. I've owned two Specials and ridden with two other guys on Specials extensively. We are constanly looking for gas every 100 miles...that's about the time you hit reserve.

Occasionally you can push one to 110 or 120 if you're riding a sane speed of 75 mph with no head wind.

I have some work to do on it. Some body filler the PO used to fill a small dent. It's rusted inside so I need to line it. It will go on my E. The Tank from my E will be painted black to be an alternate tank for my LG.

They are few and far between. About 6 months ago there was a Venturer tank "NOS" on Ebay. I think it went for $300.
I paid $100 for mine (I think).

Isn't the Venturer tank just the regular gas tank used on the European XS11 standard? I seem to recall reading something about you can tell the US bikes from the European bikes by the shorter pipes, higher handlebars and smaller fuel tank.

The bikes across the pond did have the extra gallon. I know I'm looking for one, and will probably have to "pay" for it. As I'm on this trip, trying to "make time" an extra gallon would be nice.

Spotting the big tank

There is a small but noticeable difference to the shapes of the standard and the larger tanks, worth watching out for.
