  • Petcock replacement

I've searched the threads and not found anything yet.

Does anyone know of a replacement vacuum operated petcock that will fit the XJ or Special tank. I am ybound and determined to get rid of these octopus.

I know I know I can "Y" the two outputs to gether...but If I can find a third party diaphram type vacuum operated petcock I would prefer that so I don't have to remeber to turn off the petcock.

Sorry, Maximan. I the 12 years or so I've been messing around with XSs and XJs, I have not come across a vacuum operated petcock that is made for the Special or the XJ. The closest I've seen, and I'm not sure if it was vacuum petcosks for the Special, or Special petcocks to fit a Standard, was an aluminum plate that bolted onto the petcock mounting holes in the tank, then had another set of holes for fastening the replacement petcock. Come to think of it, that may have been an adaptor plate to let you fit Pingel petcocks to a Standard.

My recently re-built, hopped up '79 Special caught fire and burned everything from the top of the engine up: gas tank, wiring, seat, & melted my windshield all over the front of the bike. Just bought a 1980 Special that has been non oped for 9 years. My Skoot will rise from the ashes and be re named "The Phoenix!"

Ed have you been drinking again?

I've never understood why Yamaha would design such a mangled mess on the Special and something so straight forward on teh standard. The other brain tease is the fact that the flange of the twain is utterly different!

        Arrrgh!

          "Them damned engineers!"

Like anything else... in order to justify their paychecks, designers have to once in a while design something new. Not everything new is a step forward.
Like those $30 rear wheel bearings that can only be had from Yamaha. (I've seen other rim designs that called for a long bearing, but that was accomplished by pressing in two standard bearings)

Dunno. The bolt spacing on my tank is 34 mm. I didn't see any petcocks there with same spacing.

Well it says it's 44 mm. My tank uses a 34mm petcock.

I bought 34mm spacing adapters from Pingle and two 22m Pingle petcocks. Trouble is for me I have a 78e Standard 46mm bolt spacing ouch. For sale two pingle petcocks and two 34 mm bolt spacing adapter plates new in the box. These are beautiful and will flow over twice the amout of fuel as virtually any other fuel valve. I have $220.00 into this and it won't work on my standard Merde!

Your Pingles are mechanical right? They don't have a vacuum operated diaphram to open and close the valve.

If the Standard is 46mm and those vac-petcocks GNE posted are 44mm, and they by luck happen to seal on the XS tank, then a chainsaw file can elongate both holes by 1mm for a possible fit.

Yes, the Pingles are mechanical NOT vacuum. They are very well made and opperate perfectly smooth, very nice item.
The special bolt spacing is 34mm not 44mm.
                          Cheers, 50gary
