  • clutch cable installation

I have a '80 Midnight Special and a month ago the end of the clutch cable at the lever came off while riding home. I finally purchased a new cable as my wedding and honeymoon have kept me away as of late. Could anyone tell me how to replace the cable? My problem is the steps at the tranny. Thanks.

    No biggie.
Take out the two screws that hold the engine round clutch cover.
Take a small screwdriver and pry the cover off.
You will see a small lever with a metal clamp looking thingie that catches the cable.
Route the cable, hook it up at the lever end on the handlebars, then put it through the top hole and align the clamp like thingie.
Take a large flat screwdriver, hook it on the clutch casing and push the lever up, hook up the cable to the clamp thingie and watch the fingers!
    You're done!
No need to readjust the clutch, but if needed, do it at the lever.
If you cannot set it properly, follow the procedure in the tech tips section.
And test the clutch before starting the engine.

    Ride safe!

If it doesn't have an engine, it's not a sport, it's only a game.

You might have to adjust the cable length after it "breaks in." The sleeve compresses just a little.
