    Hi TJ.

Do you know the history of the bike? Like, how long has it been sitting as a basket case? How long has it been since it ran? Why was it taken apart in the first place? If the carbs were left with gas inside, you probably have to do a really good job cleaning them. There are alot of great posts on this task if you do a search, and look in the tech tips (link on the left of the page).
I would check all the basic things firstly, compression check, is the battery new/good, are you getting spark on all the plugs, are the float levels set correctly, that sort of thing..
With that high idle I would check for leaks in the carb boots.

BTW, welcome to one of my favourite websites..... the people on here are great.
Oh yeah, to the rest of you regulars who read this, if I haven't said it before,
    THANKYOUVERYMUCH!!

      Hi tjfisher30

On the behalf of us here we welcome you to the board. Hope we can be some help.

You said that you cleaned the carbs but need to be rebuilt. I have to ask, how did you clean them? Did you clean with carb cleaner and blow dry with compressed air or did you take them apart and soak them. If you did soak them did you take them apart to where you had four carbs. There is rubber seals in the throttle shafts that need to be removed before you soak them. Also did you take out the main jet as well as the slow jet, air jet in the back of the carb and the air/fuel screw on the top front, the float needle and seat, oh and the main nozzel. Did you clean them and make sure all the holes are open and clean. Your problem with the leaking fuel for 1 and 4 could be the little rubber seals around the float seat as they are just pushed in. And if torn may leak. One way to check is turn the carbs upside down and take the bowls off and hook up a fuel supply and look for leaks. You should see if its the seal or needle float. The back fire you have could be that the carbs need to be adjusted or synchronize to each other. Also could be the leaking fuel makeing it so rich. You can find all this and more if you will click the Tech Tips on the left or on the first forum page just scroll down. You will see Maintenance, Repairs, Modifications. Theres all sorts of tips for you. You will be amazed. I was. Well we are here to help with anything you may need to ask, but I must say you will find your answer alot quicker if you read the tech tips first. If there is anything else just ask. There will be a bunch of us to give you answers along with more questions.

      Good luck!

I know I'm forgetting to say something

Your carbs, even if you got lucky the first time round and got them truly clean, are probably still a mile out of sync. That will cause the problem you describe where it doesn't want to return to idle.

Any interesting story to go with this such as how you find the bike, what interested you, etc? And pictures, we all like to see pictures!

            Parts from MikesXS

            Hey TJ,

The float needle valve/seat kit #48-1445 will work for your carbs, however, if you haven't already ordered the gaskets, then the kit #48-1408 will give you the gasket as well, and you get all the parts for $2.00 less than buying separately!

The second kit comes with a rubber pilot jet tower plug, but unless you've got a set of the transitional carbs that still has the tunnel between the main and pilot jet towers, you don't need or want to use that plug!
