  • Just thought I would post a couple of pictures of my 78 XS 1100E

Just thought I would post a couple of pictures of my 78 XS 1100E I picked it up last year and so far all I have realy had to do is ride.
This bike is rock solid and runs like a top. I have so far replaced the fuse block with the blade style fuse box and added an led tail light. Soon plan on removing the fairing seems such a shame to hide her behind all of that plastic!

Nice ride, it looks like it's in really good shape.
I wish I were as lucky as you with my 80xs11SG, I just pulled it out of storage this spring and am having nothing but problems with the fuel system.

I like the fairing on that. Mine doesn't have the molded in turn signals. Same color as mine and all.

I find that on a hot day riding with the fairing on is almost worse than riding in my truck. I will probably keep it that way if I want to go on a long trip I can mount it again.

That fairing is an after market. I'm pulling the on off of my bike, and putting the original PAcifico fairing on. I think they look better, and I know they have LESS wind resistance.
What I have done with my fairing for summer riding is cut one windscreen down. I have it so the air will hit the lower part of my helmet, but NOT quit at the bottom. This allows for plenty of air in the summer, without the "helmet lift" that trys to pull your head off.

I thought about cutting down the windscreen but think for now a I will pull it off and put the small windscreen off
my other bike on its just one of the little universal jobs works great for reducing wind blast at highway speeds.
I also think the bike looks nicer with out all of the extra stuff.

                    Also in Edmonton

                    Hi Orion,

I have recently bought a XS1100 and also live in Etown... do you want to go for a ride sometime? Do you know anyone else in Edmonton who has the same bike? PM me if you want.

Orion, your XS is SUPER SWEET! DEFINATELY do not get rid of the full dress set up. Before you completely take the fairing off, just remove the lowers so that air will sweep past your lower legs. I bet you will find that summer riding is much more tolerable that way. Plus, pulling that fairing can be a big pain in the butt!

P.S. How many miles is your XS pushing?

Orion, you were very fortunate to come upon an XS of this caliber. Mine is very nice as well, but the degree of your setup makes me envious. Is there an interesting story behind your acquisition?

Also, upon closer inspection of your pics, it appears that you also will need a set of frontal foot pegs. Some folks call them hiway pegs. They mount to the front crash bar. After you remove your fairing lowers, the hiway pegs facilitate the relocation of your legs out and away from all that enging heat as you ride, and makes for a much more tolerable cruise when the temp outside is sky-hi.

Also a bit of advice. Unfortunately, the rear of the XS frames weren't originally designed to support the weight and resulting vibrational shocks from the optionally mounted rear trunks. What you may find will happen over time is your frame will break and the whole rear setup will collapse, so keep your eye on the frame tubing directly under the seat, especially just past the seat bolts. I know from experience that having the rear end collapse on a road trip is an extreme pain!
