  • Carb bowl screws

    Anybody know the size of the screws holding the carb bowls and diaphragm covers on the carb.

    I want to order a box of stainless hex heads to replace those ****ty philips head screws in four sets of mikunis I have.

    Since I have to order them I can't just take an old one for a match. M5 is my guess, I can measure the length.

    M5x0.8 is correct. Think about getting mostly 10mm thread length, with a few 15mm thread length for spots where other things are also being held on such as the clutch cable guide, the throttle linkage, etc.

      You can also pull a few screws and go down to your local ACE hardware. They had all the metric hex bolts I needed for a Honda project I did.

        phillips screws

        That's a strange coincidence, I just came in from the garage to ask pretty much the same question since I just all but destroyed the heads on those stupid phillips head screws. Now I don't feel so bad since I know i'm not the only one having trouble with them.

        Does anybody have any good tricks for getting them out? I think I'm the first person to have the carbs open since factory and everything down to the idle screws are siezed.

          You could try to carefully cut a straight cut on the head and use a standard driver to back them out.

            straight cut

            I guess I might have to, but I'm still not sure how to get the idle mixture screws out they turn ccw for a few turns and then just stop. Well 3 out for of them do anyway, one came out fine. I might have to carefully drill those I guess the screwdrivers already made a mess of them.

              Hey Tibo,

              We want to make sure we are talking about the same things. The "screws" down inside the towers in the bottom of the carbs under the bowls are the Pilot JETS which are screwed in. The Pilot SCREWS are on the top of the carbs next to where they mount onto the boots, they are external in the 78-79 series, they are recessed in tubes in the 80-82 series.

              The pilot jets can be gummed up on the ends so that after you turn them CCW for several turns, they just spin but don't fall out, you'll need to use some compressed air to blow them out, or a fine wire with a little bend in the end stuck down into the jet that might allow you to pull it out against the resistance of the varnish?

              But, if you ARE talking about the pilot SCREWS on the top front of the carbs, there are rubber washers near the bottom, and they can wedge the screws down in the tunnels in the recessed ones!

                It's those recessed pilot screws that are the trouble, the flat blade screwdriver is sure making a mess of the heads. Any tips on getting them out T.C.?

                  Careful use of an impact driver will usually get stubborn phillips head screws out. Think about replacing with socket screws once you do get them out.

                  For a stubborn idle mixture screw, you might have to use a fine diamond burr in a Dremel tool to very carefully cut a new slot. Be sure the screwdriver blade you use is also crisp and sharp so it doesn't slip in the new slot. When cutting the new slot, be especially careful not to cut into the threads in the body of the carbs.

                    impact driver

                    I would never have thought of using an impact driver, I'm definetly going to try that. The idle screws are still making me kind of nervous though, oh well wish me luck I guess.

                      M5x0.8. Thanks Ken.

                      I will go the 10mm length as I'm ordering a box of 100 for around $30 bucks. Need 64 for all four carb sets I have and I don't mind the little extra sicking through. Give you something to squirt WD40 onto before you remove them.

                        Along with the impact driver, try a small pair o' visegrips. Surprisingly easy.

                              .. i had just typed a big ol long @ss story about how stainless steel bolts are crap and how to use them, but i hit the wrong button and lost it [took me an hour and a half]. so here is the short version: stainless steel is a soft metal, they look good but they are crap. in my long @ss story i had instruction on how to use them without stripping them or breaking them off.. but screw it, you can figure it out the hard way just like i did.
