  • OIL in rear air shocks?

My 82 Xj1100J Maxim is in refurbishing faze. Trying to check all that may have gone bad while it was setup in a container. Oil, filter, air cleaner, battery, tires, fuse cleaning, connectors cleaned, drive has new grease and oil, so many things, then I removed the rear shocks to wire buff the aluminum housings only to spill oil from them. I don't know how much or what kind to use in replacement. I don't have a repair manual yet. Another problem is the rear brake pads are worn at an angle. It seams that the caliper is canted and can't find anything bent. Is this normal or not? Also the rubber bushing attached to the frame stud is broken, New one anybody. HELP!!

Normal for the rear brakes to be on an angle, designed this way, no fix needed. Don't understand what you mean by the bushing, bushing for what, the rear shock?

IMHO replace the pads if it's been sitting. (partsnmore carries them for ~$16.)

I'll go grab my manual and take a look at the shock oil.

According to the Yamaha Service manual for XJ1100J

Oil level is measured at the air pipe inlet on the top of the shock.

      Hold upright
Insert depth guage of vernier caliper
oil level should be 75 mm or 2.95 inches from the top.

      Use 5w oil, (fork oil).

      Cheers!

          Busted bushing

This is the rubber piece that the anti rotation bar goes on. Looks like a donut but is captured by a flange on the stud comming from the frame. Not sure if the brake bracket is supposed to straddle this or just set between it anf the frame.

The anti rotation plate is called the torque stopper. There is a rubber grommet that it slips over a stud on the swingarm. I am running with out the grommet, and I don't have any problems, The slot on the torque stopper should be engaged by the stud. Not over or under it, or next to it. That is what keeps the caliper from moving in the direction of rotation.

              Rubber grommet

Thanks john. I realized after looking at the slot in the torque stopper plate that it could not fit in the slot on the grommet but had to go on the stud. I think the grommet was there to keep the torque stopper close to the swing arm.
