Do you guys know whether or not carbs from a 79 special will fit a 78e? I checked the Yamaha parts fiche and the carb bodys are the same part number. Is there any thing I have to do to make this work?

They are a plug and play item. Just make sure you keep the fuel and vent hoses routed proper;y.

      Mark,

The only difference according to the manual is the size of the starter jet, so it should be pretty much a bolt-n-go situation, just synch and pilot adjust! Enjoy!

        TC:
Are the starter jets something that must be changed, or is it fine to leave them as they are. I got the carbs today and was wondering about the choke lever. Is the choke lever on the specials bent at an angle or straight like my standard?
        TIA,

.. i dont think there is a difference in the starter jets, if there is it would be small. i'd say just try them. as far as the difference in the levers i think you can interchange them. the special levers are bent out some, or yours has been subject to xsive force.

The choke levers are interchangable. They are different in appearence, though. If you look at the lever from the side of the bike, the rubber coated handle will be to the right of the main body of the lever for a Standard, and on a Special it is to the left.

On the carbs that I got, all four float bowls and all four tops are chromed. Is that stock for a special? The choke lever is also chromed. On my standard, only the outside tops are chrome and none of the bowls are. If I decide to try to straighten the choke lever, is there a safe way to do it without weakening the metal too much. If I decide to replace the choke lever, it looks like the pivot point is some kind of rivet. Can I get around that, or should I just drill it out and re-rivet?
              Thanks guys,

.. I would just change the whole choke assembly via the two screws that hold it to the carb , if you had too. i dont know which carbs you have, all of the later model carbs[80-82] came with chrome caps. no models came with chrome float bowls, those are a bonus for you
early model carbs have three holes in the ventury[not including the large one that looks like a frown at the top]
the late carbs have four vent holes in the ventury
