My bike is having a problem charging. I have a 1982 Xj11. When it is idling I get very little charge but when i tilt the bike to the right it starts to charge better, not optimal but much better. It has a new rectifier and i am puttin g in a new battery today but I am stumped. Any ideas?

I think your bike has the alternator with brushes. My guess is replace the brushes, and it will probably charge once again. Yamaha changed the alts to try and produce a little more amps for the bikes lights, etc.

Yup, you have brushes. If you take that side plate off for your alternator, the stator and the brushes will be attached to that sideplate, leaving the rotor still attached to the crank. The brushes ride on the face of the rotor. 3 screws and you can gently pop out your stator, then 2 more phillips screws takes out that brush assembly. I don't know if you can buy replacement brushes or not, they look like they are attached pretty permantly to me, (Probably wrong on that) but you might consider just replaceing the whole thing. Here's a cheap one right now on Ebay. The whole shebang is going pretty cheap, and you would have a spare rotor, stator, and sideplate to boot. Good Luck.

Ive talked to some mechanics and they say that ill need a stator. Ill replace the brushes first then see what happens. does anyone know where to get a stator ive found them on Ebay but im a little weary of used parts. thanxJake

As long as the rotor hasn't rubbed a stator, a used one should be fine. I know of a place that rebuilds them, and they look great, but if you want to ride your bike any more this season, I sure can't recommend them. It took almost a month and a half to get mine back.
That link I sent you above in this posting is a good price. You get everything with it. I paid 40 bucks just for a stator on Ebay. If you want the name and address of the guy that rebuilds them, PM me.
If you shy away from used parts with these bikes, you may have a tough time keeping yours going in the future. More and more.... that's all that's available.
