  • who's in madison?

hey y'all, felt a more detailed introduction was in order here, being a new eleven owner that will quite possibly enlist the help of many who attend this forum in his quest for two-wheeled euphoria

The story starts last year when I found love with a 1972 xs650. Since then, I've been wanting to get my hands on an eleven to compliment it properly. It's probably only fitting that I found a really nice E in Baraboo that hasn't been run in 5 years.

I changed the oil, filled her up with fresh fuel, and she ran beautifully, albeit with some bog in the low end, until my pipes went from chrome to an ugly blue all the way under the bike.

So off off came the carbs to adjust the clip and I decided to do a thorough cleaning while I was at it. Because of this, I managed to choke off idle to the #1 cylinder and now have the carbs off the bike for the 3rd time, trying to dig out the tip of the idle mixture screw and quite severely distorting the shape of that orfice. Mind you, all four tips were previously broken off, I just managed to make #1 worse.

Now I'm at a loss to fix this and don't know what to do aside from buying another set of carburetors. But this set is perfectly fine except for those broken tips. I wish there were a fix that would not involve excessive amounts of gouging and swearing and pounding and..

You can read the original thread here if you like: http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread...threadid=10316

My intention with this additional thread was to better give everyone an idea of who they're dealing with and to solicit as much help far & wide to help with the little thing that's become a big problem. I'd also love to meet another xsive in Wisconsin who can share my passion for this bike and help me get it back on the road. Hopefully make a good friend in the process. I live in Madison myself. Is there anyone nearby?

If nothing else, I might be willing to send my carbs to anyone who thinks they can solve my problems for a reasonable price since I've already dumped more useless $ into this bike than I care to account for. The oil change & addition of a K&N air filter with the proper mains are pretty much the only useful things I've done thus far.

So that's the gist of it. Any help that anyone might have would be greatly greatly appreciated. If not for this forum, I wouldn't know where else to go.

Look forward to meeting y'all, virtually or otherwise!

    Cheers,
    >Dan

I'm in Milwaukee, but I am also Carb lazy and had my local wrench deal with my last carb rebuild. he probably did a better job than I could anyway.

If you want to talk to them, they are generally good with advice on the phone and specialize in vintage bikes, let me know.
I've been in more than one Hemisphere, and I wrote a book to help you do it too (or just prepare better for that week long road trip). Going Small, not just for the little guys.
