  • Homemade Synch tool question

    http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread...=&threadid=986

Is all this really needed? Ya I know the little aquarium valve is mainly for convenience, but what's the PVC Plenum for? Why couldn't you just hook the guage and a hose directly to the vacuum port, and plug the other three?

Hey, I'm a tightass and don't see the need to buy PVC pieces and little brass fittings if it's not really needed. I've already got the guage, line and plugs.

The plenum was used to dampen the fluctuation of the needle on the vacuum gauge.
You won't get an accurate reading without either Bill's plenum setup, or some other method of damping the vacuum. Without it, the needle will bounce so erratically as to make it useless. I've got a gang of 4 valves, and each one has a damping valve inline.

You can buy a set of four vacuum carb gauges from JC Whitney for about $65. I bought mine there.

          Hi
I put an aquarium valve in the line with the gauge and use it to dampen, but not stop completely the gauges oscillations
          works ok

What kind of ainline dampening valve do I need. I'm not familiar with them. I'd like to avoid the large plenum if possible, so it will fit in my toolbox.

You can dampen the vacuum pulses by inserting a small plastic plug into each of the lines near the end that attaches to the vacuum nipples. Use a small drill bit to drill a small orifice through the plug and you're in business.

In the homejobbie tip article he mentions wishing that he had used a bigger pvc chamber. Well I made a huge one (5"diameter x 20" long) and let me tell you, it can be too big. It takes too long for the pressure to equilabrate. So, keep it a reasonable size if you go that route.
