Looking at putting 4-1 pipes on my 81 standard. Anyone know if I need to tune my carbs differently from standard pipes, and if so approx settings?

Depends on what else has been done with the engine. Normally, one size on the main will do it, but if you've drilled the stock air box, or have pod filters, you may need two or three sizes up.

Years ago in my Ignorant Youth,
I put on 4-1 pipes shortly after I got my bike back from Japan where I was stationed, and I didn't rejet it at all. Drove the equivalent of an IRON BUTT ride from Va. down to Ft. Benning, Ga. and then back, no burned pistons, and had plenty of power up to redline. But I'm sure it was a bit lean!
DiverRay knows his stuff, would be well advised to follow his recommendation!

I've got a kerker 4-1 w/ a k&n airbox, went up 2 on the mains, runs pretty good (cept for the fouled plug on #1, separate issue btw, read the thread at http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread...threadid=10316 , comments very welcome!!)
the consensus relating to jet sizes around here seems to be located at http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthrea...s=&threadid=382'78 xs1100e (red monster)
