  • carb search.......

    Well, here we go....

Will pick up our (Mine & Brother-in-laws) most recent purchase tonite. Found a 1980 XS1100G, minus the carbs, and it's in pretty rough shape. Been sitting too long and some of it outside under a tarp!

Won't know exactly how bad it is until we get it home and go to work on it. First priority, of course, is to find a set of working carbs. After that I guess we'll have to depend on some of you to help with the problems we encounter.

Both I and my B-I-L are former BMW owners. He had a K1100RT and I had a R80RT so we aren't complete new to having fun. Why we sold them, I'll never know. Maybe it was fate so we could get this Yamaha beast and give ourselves enough work to keep us busy for a decade or so.

New to XS Eleven and look forward to talking to you all at one point or another.

      Welcome to the site.
There are some threads already about working on a bike that's sat for a long time, so just do a search. Don't be afraid to ask for anything, around here, we'll tell you NO, and send it out just to have fun!!
Read the "Tech Tips", as there is a LOT of good information there, and have fun!

If you can't find carbs I can help you with fuel injection.

After I spent a fortune on carbs on eBay I found several places in a google search that had a full set of carbs for around $150, sounds like a lot, but I paid twice that on eBay ......
              Good luck with the rebuild!
and we'll just ignore the Mav's comment ..... (notice, I'm in San Antonio.... the place with the "muddy ditch" and the "rude fans"...)

In all seriousness, this is the place to find out more than you ever thought you need to know about these bikes, the Tech Tips are incredible, and the forums are even better, they clear up any questions for the tech tips (which are very well written actually), and you have access to literally hundreds of people who not only own these bikes, but work on them also.
              Good Luck!

I think the Mavs fans were very wrong to boo Finley. He put in 8 solid years here. It was a great series no matter who won, but, it's kinda like Johnny Damon leaving my beloved Red Sox for the Evil Empire in New York. Besides we have our own muddy ditch here called the Trinity River (yuk).

                  Yes, welcome, guys.

This is a great site and if you cannot get your XS back in shape with info from here, then it was probably not salvagable in the first place.

                    Got it!

Got it! Picked it up tonite and off loaded it into B-I-L's garage along with several corrugated boxes of mostly carb parts abd airbox parts etc.

It will be a challenge but both of us have decided it's going to be well worth the effort. Not enough good pieces in the carb box so we definetely will be needing working carbs and maybe an airbox as I understand they are boogers to put back together.

Our first project is going to be to drain everything and try and get the engine loosened by hand enough to get a new battery in it to see if we can get the starter to turn it over. New plugs and oil and maybe some fuel lines replaced.

Once that is completed hopefully we will have decided wether to buy carbs or maybe fuel injection.

Thanks all for you encouragement and good words.
Dan would you send me info on the fuel injection? Address below.
John W. I'm in Arlington and B-I-L is in Richardson.

Again...Thx all..look forward to working and chatting with you all.

I have quite a few parts here for these bikes. I have a couple of complete airboxes, but no carb parts for a 79. If you need any advice on the repairs, just drop me an email. You can find my email address by looking at my profile. Be glad to help.

Duhh, I just reread your first post and realized that you have an 80G. I do have some parts for newer style (80-81) carbs.

By your description you stated that you had an 80G which is a standard. I believe these http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/YAMAH...QQcmdZViewItem will work with your bike or http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1979-...QQcmdZViewItem . There is also an airbox out on Ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Yamah...QQcmdZViewItem .
