i found the Vin code sheet on here and appratently my take is either from a different model year or someone painted it. is there any way to distinguish between 2 tanks on these things?

Most of the tanks for the standards are interchangeable. There are a FEW larger tanks, made for the "touring" models, I think. The paint can be checked buy scraping a little off on the bottom of the rear tank mount. If it was repainted, you should be able to find the original color under the paint.
The difference between the "standard" and "special" tanks are easy to see. The standard has a square cap in the middle of the tank, and the special has an oval type cap on the right side of the tank.
