Fork Gators

So it is not anywhere near winter, but you have to plan ahead, and I am looking for a set of fork gators for my xs11, since I am doing the seal and fluid anyway.

Does such a thing exist? I haven't found anything online, and a forum search (Amazingly) turned up no hits.

Excuse my ignorance.... but what's a fork gator?? Maybe it's called something else?

Fork gators cannot be found in Florida. I haven't heard that term since I got rid of the Norton. Fork gators (called fork covers here), are rubber/plastic covers that protect the fork tubes. You see them all the time on dirt bikes. Early street bikes had em as standard equipment. If you travel fravel roads alot, they are a good idea on street rigs as a rock can put a chunk in the forktubes resulting in the seal getting ruined. I guess you best bet would be to figure out how long you needed them and the required diameter and go shopping for them. Old Bike Barn might have some that will work or some of the dirt bike ones could be made to fit. Late model dirt bikes have really big tubes so you have to go with something from a older dirt bikes.

I was wondering if that was what he was talking about. I don't guess I have ever seen them on a street bike. My old YZ250 has them though, but don't know about the availability of them from the older years.... can't think of a time I ever had to replace a set?? It might be a nice add-on to a bike though.... I think they come in about any color.... I can see TC's thoughts about finding a green set already!

Fork Gaitors (Pr.) for 1970 XS1 650 but adaptable to All 1971-84 models (remove stock dust covers). Give your 650 that “British” look. Provides great fork protection. 1970 models had a lip piece on the lower triple tree on which to clamp the boot, for later models simply insert a piece of split rubber rad hose inside and clamp the upper part of the boot to the fork tube. We suggest a breathing hole be punched on a lower pleat also (face to rear) to allow venting of air.

Thanks, those are what I was looking for.

I never mean to drive on gravel... but I get lost a lot. Found myself on woodchips once last year. I wouldn't recommend riding a full dress xs1100h on woodchips. And it will keep the salt off this winter too, a bit at least.

Fork gaitors

Take a look at a product called Seal Savers @ sealsavers.com
They are used on many off-road bikes but I thought about trying them on my special.

Fork boots (that's what we call them in the Pacific NW) are also good for making fork seals last longer.

I may try a set the next time I replace the fork seals on the Mongrel. Too much trouble in install unless you're tearing into it anyway.

They make a neoprene sleeve with a velcro attachment to add on without having to pull the tubes out. Might be worth a look...

Fork gaitors, boots, whatever you want to call them are available from Rocky Distributing which is where a lot of dealers order aftermarket stuff from. I just bought some to put on my XJ650 project. They look great and will really extend seal life.
