  • Mystery Carb washer?

    Finally got started on "ol' Rip" this weekend. After cleaning the first carb, I noticed this washer left on the table that I didn't know where it came from. Set it aside, and made a mental note to pay closer attention on the next one... Ya that worked!

    3 more carbs later I still can't figure out where these boogers are coming from, but I keep ending up with a new one on the table after every carb. Sneaky little damn washers!

    Here's a pic (sorry for the poor quality) it's laying next to a pilot jet for a size reference. Anyone point me in the right direction?

    Oh Ya... it's an "81 XS 1100 H

    Looks like the little brass washer that goes under the main jet...Not under... but WITH the main jet...

      looks like the washer from the base of the float, #47 or 48 on the fische

        It is not the Brass Washer that goes in between the main jet and the needle jet's threaded side. I have all of those accounted for, and they are much larger anyways. This washer won't fit under the Main jet or anywhere related to it that I can see.

            According to the fische on Yamaha's Website #47&48 go with a pan head screw that goes to the bracket holding the four carbs together. This thing is real tiny and seems to have fallen from the inside of the carb when cleaning. I can't seem to find it on the fische.

              Yes, I think that's it. I specifically looked there on carbs 2-4, but I didn't see anything down there. It must have come out while shooting carb cleaner through there. It's the only place it fits.

              Holding the pilot screw upside down, I assume it goes on top of the spring?

              I don't see it or the spring on the Yamaha site's fische. Is there a hhigher res fische or a better diagram that shows it?

                .. it goes on the idle/fuel mixture screw, between the spring and the equally little oring[it keeps the spring from eating the oring when screwing around with the screw]. make sure you get that little oring straight, or you will have a problem.. it's best if you remove the orings, from the holes, and put them on the screw, before reinstalling them. a little WD40 helps things go back together easier.

                  But I am fairly positive that there were no o-rings in there. Are the o-rings on all models? Mine's a 81 H model.

                  Can I get the o-rings anywhere? I'm also missing 1 of the washers.

                    The o-rings should come with the carb rebuild kit.

                      .. i have never used a carb rebuild kit before so i'm going to take Randys word for it. if you have the rebuild kit then you still have to make sure that you have all of the old orings out. you can see them in the bottom of the holes[if you didnt blow them out] with a flash light. they will make the bottom of the holes look dark, if they are not there then the bottom of the holes will look shiny.. most of the time they are cocked in the holes sideways. you should be able to see straight through the hole, into the ventury[see light in the bottom of the hole]

                        Hey Randy where are you getting your rebuild kits? The spring, washer, and or o-ring for the idle mixture screws were never included in any of my kits (was thinking that this was due to it being a 'non-serviceable' item according to Yamaha - they do not even show these parts on their microfiche)

                        In any case, you can order the screw, spring, washer, and o-ring or just the washer and o-ring from MikesXS - look at the bottom of this page

                          It looks like the kits from MikesXS and PartsnMore do not include the washer or ring, but MikesXS sells an O-ring, Washer and Plug(cover?) for $4.

                          The K&L kits do include them along with the pilot screw and spring, but cost $6 more per kit. Just don't use the jets that come with the K&L kits, correct?

                          But since it would actually be cheaper to buy the 2 seperate kits from Mikes, that's probably the route that I'll take, since I see no reason to change the actual Pilot Screw and spring.

                          Will the carbs run right without the O-rings? I saw no signs of an O-ring in any of the pilot screw holes. And I know that the bike ran good 7 years ago.

                            Yes, that's exactly what I did (ordered the rebuild kit with gasket and float valve only, then ordered new pilot jets and the washer & o-ring for the idle screw.)

                            Just toss the idle screw plug.

                            As to running without the idle screw o-ring - I had unknowingly run w/o for several years until I rebuilt my carbs instead of taking to someone else - seems to be more responsive to adjustments now and much easier to tune - of course, that's probably just an inflated ego from doing it myself and saving $$ too!
