  • Bike wont start

Hope someone can help. I just bought a '80 xs1100gs. It had been sitting for several years. The guy I bought it from quit riding it when the muffler rotted off from the pipe. I sealed the tank(POR 15) and cleaned out the dead mice from the aircleaner. I have been unable to get it to start. I ended up taking the carbs back off and opened the bowls up. 3 of the float pins were stuck to the floats.(floats stuck) 2 of the main jets were also gunked up from old gas. Cleaned them up. Everything else looked good. Put everything back together and hooked it all back up. It still wont start. It sounds like it is right there, so close. I even tried bypassing the octopus since I have read so many bad things about them. Still, no luck. It will fire if I spray a little starting fluid in it, but it immediately dies. Plugs look good. Not fouled.
If anybody can help, it would be greatly appreciated!

Take out the pilot jets, pilot screws, and pilot air jets, and soak them. While you are soaking them blast out the passages with carb cleaner...all of them. Read up in the archives here on the particulars.

Fires with starting fluid but then dies when the fluid runs out. Skids' right... it's carbs.
