Yeah I changed the oil but left the filter. It looked to be in pretty good shape. rather clean actually. SO this evening I am gonna pull of the mufflers and see whats what. Probably gonna pull off the carbs to do a pre-sync w/the bread tie. SO I have been looking around the site looking for how to do a compression test, and what I need. Cant find it anybody want to explain how it is done or where I can find it on the site and possibly what I wil need? One more question , Does a 78 stanadard have seperate gear oil for the transmission or does it use motor oil? Thanks fellas

All XS's and XJ11's use the same oil in the trans as the engine. They are in the same space in the engine. The middle drive is a seperate unit and it takes gear oil. To perform a compression test, you will need to buy a compression tester. It is essentially a pressure gauge that has a hose that threads into the spark plug hole, and records the pressure generated in the cylinder when the piston make its up and down travel. There is a 'Schreader valve' on the gauge that will trap the pressure so you can read it. When you do the test, make sure the throttle is held open, and that the engine is cranked several times. After performing the first test, add a spoon full of oil to each cylinder through the spark plug hole, and crank the engine over slowly to spread the oil throughout the cylinder. Now do another test on all cylinders. If you had a low reading on the first test, and it comes up in the second, then you likely have worn rings. If the reading fails to increase, then you likely have a stuck/burned/worn valve.
Thanks for the info fellas, where can I get a compresssion tester? And I did the bread tie sync and installed the carbs and the bike was idling at 5000 rpms. So I killed the engine turned the Idle screw on carb 3 all the way out and it still trying to idle at 5k. Any suggestions? Also Are you supposed to beable to push the wire entirely under the butterfly or not? thanks for any suggestions or replies.

Almost any auto parts store will carry the comp. tester!
The wire is just to provide a position, to hold the butterfly open, you're not supposed to necessarily pull the wire "while" the butterfly is pressing against it.
Another technique that is not YET in the Pre-synch tech tip is to use the 3 small holes on the upper throat of the carbs, engine side. You can adjust the butterflies so that it just partly covers one of the holes, and the same setting on the other three, it's just another way of getting the butterflies to be positioned as close to each other as possible.
Are you sure the butterflies are closing all the way, and that the throttle shaft and round mechanism that the throttle cable secures to isn't hanging up on anything, like the O-clamps that hole the carbs to the boots?

That's a sync screw you turned out...............now they are out of sync. The idle adj. is underside of carb assembly bout in the middle.........a larger thumb/finger screw, screw out to idle down.

I didnt look at it last night, but I dont remember seeing a thumb/finger screw on the bottom of the carb assembly. I thought the screw you use to adjust the butterfly on carb three(the one in between carb 3&2 on top angled toward the rear of the bike) was the master idle adjust. That was why you start with that one while doing your pre-sync. You get 3 right with that one, adjust the others to the same gap, and the use the one you adjusted 3 with to adjust the idle for all? does this sound right. I wish I had got a chance to mess w/carbs last night, but I did one of the front calipers that was stuck instead. Anybody got any (don't dos) for cleaning calipers(internal) and resevoir? I was looking at my front end brake system, and I didnt see a master cylinder? The resevoir on the handle has a brake line coming out going to a splitter and the down to the calipers. Am I missing something?

You've got the sequence right. The large screw is the main idle adjustment.
Your front master cylinder is attached to the lever, under the reservoir. Clean the brake system with brake fluid or brake cleaner. Do a search here for the details and methods.
