  • XJ Tank on an XS

Has anyone ever put an XJ tank on an XS?
I remember seeing one somewhere on the web years ago and now I can't find it. I remember reading about having to modify the rear tank mount ( I think it had to be moved back, or an XJ mount welded in?) Any info, or experience would be appreciated.
As would the extra 5 litres of fuel for road trips.

    Thanx,
    Glen.

    Getting Tanked.

    Hey Glen,

I've got an XJ tank I'll be putting on Godzilla ..eventually!

The tank mount bolt design is different, the XJ has a long slot wide enough to fit across the twin frame tubes and is curved on both ends vs. the Xs11's little round shaft and rubber grommet.

I have a welder, and plan on cutting off much of the XJ's mount and then weld a triangular piece like the XS's in place, so that it won't interfere with the seat mount.

The front of the tank is larger/wider, and is said that the fork tubes may hit it when the bars are turned to full turns left or right, but I almost never need to turn them that far, mostly for just maneuvering it in the garage. I may weld some stops onto the frame to stop the triple trees range of travel so the tubes won't impact the tank. The petcocks should be a simple transfer from the Special to XJ tank.

Once I get to where I can do this, I'll be photodocumenting and posting a tech tip on it!

I have an XJ tank (which is rusted out) and I have fitted it to my 80SG. The rear mount will not work at all, and you cannot get the front of the seat to latch in. You have to raise the rear of the tank, and the front of the seat so they resemble a draw bridge beginning to open, and then force them both down together to meet the frame. The tank looked good, but I wouldn't run it with out modifyinng it to allow the seat to latch onto the frame in front.

.. in other words its going to be a lot of work.
if yours is the special, you could put the standard tank on, it is a direct switch[i have put the special tank on a standard before]. then all you would have to do is make the seat fit and hope the fork tubes dont hit the tank[special triple clamps are made one inch closer, i have put the standard triple clamps on a special before also].

I'm inclined to go with Top Cats suggestions.
I do recall though the bike I read about had the rear tank mount replaced to the other model. I could very well have misinterpreted the ro's write up, but I thought he had cut and welded (grafted ) an XJ mount onto the XS Frame, but as suggested it could very well be the mounting tang on the tank itself that was changed making it viable for the seat to hook right in.
It's too bad I can't find the picture, it looked really good. Like it should have been this way right from day 1.

As always, thanx for your inputs.
          Glen.
