  • Glue for side cover tab

The PO of my special had broken the tab on my left side cover before I bought it. He had then drilled a hole through the lower part of the cover and used a zip tie to hold the cover on.

I glued the tab on again but apparently didn't use strong enough glue for it has popped off again. Can someone recommend a "tried and true" glue to use? Also what will work to fill in the 1/4 in hole he left behind.

    fixing the side covers

Hey! I have just the thing for you! I was at a gun and knife show here in Portland, Or last year and this guy had a product called PLASTEX it is a powder and a solvent that will bid the plastic like side covers are made out of. it can be shaped into anything. The kit comes with a thermal set rubber that can be heated on a hot plate and then formed over any shape. It comes with a mini dvd with intructions and a color intruction booklet. I bought a kit and it work AWSOME ! anyway it retails for about 26.95. they have a price list for various sizes of kits, here is the website http://plastex.home.att.net/ very cool stuff!
    Hope it helps ya!

JB Weld has always worked for me. Never used it specifically on a side cover, but I have used it on many other plastic items. I always take a xacto knife and scratch little grooves into the opposing surfaces, to allow the epoxy a llittle something extra to bond to.

Otherwise, you should be able to find other types of 2 part epoxies at about any hardware store.

I just had one fixed and I don't remember what the stuff is. It was a two part epoxy used in a caulking gun. It's the stuff used to fix bumber covers on the newer plastic cars. I'm sure any body shop can direct you to the stuff. It fixed my side cover to like new.

            BG,

I'm pretty sure it was jb weld that I used last time, but thanks for the reply.

              repair to the side covers

              Hey CUBuffs,
I used the PLASTEX on both side covers and the tail peice that goes behind the seat. I plugged the hole for the emblems (cause I am going to paint text on them instead of having the bulky emblems) also the slots that are on top of the side covers were broken out and I actually replaced some of the missing plastic with the plastex. Trust me this stuff is the cats meow. It is good enough that you can even repair a plastic fuel tank. I have used it in several cases now and have been VERY happy with the results. better than CA, JB, 5 Min, for plastic repair. maybe the only ault would be model glue but that will not "replace" any missing plastic.

That sounds great. Is it easy to use?

                  side cover repair

It takes a little ingenuity (depending on the repair), but it is most definitly easy to use. Check out the web site, they have a few photos on how to's there.
