  • not running on all 4

Hey I am new here and I am a new owner of a '82 XJ 100 and I have come up to a problem... I had to do a little welding on my exaust this weekend and made the mistake of not unhooking my battery. This morning I was going to ride it to work and it started up fine but wouldn't run smooth. Well the bike is not firing on the 1st and 4th. Did I fry something in my coil? Please help me hout and get me back on the road. Any advice would be greatly helpfull. Thanks, Matt

    Hey Mopar,

Yeah, arc welding on the bike isn't the greatest thing for the electronic parts, especially the TCI!

Loosing 1 and 4 is one of three things, the ignition coil, the pickup coil, or the TCI!

Swapping the Primary wires(Orange-grey,etc.) from one coil to the other, and have the plugs sticking in the ends of the wires laying on the head, and then doing a test turnover will let you see if the FIRE moves from your good 2-3 to 1-4 or not. IF it does, then the coil is okay, and you can move on to testing the TCI and PU coils.

If the coil wire set that was working and now has the suspect coil on it, and it doesn't now spark then the coil is bad!

Go to this page: Randy's TCI repair/test page and you can do the tests to determine what IS fried!

Hope it's the ignition coil, cheapest and easiest to fix/replace!
    Good Luck.
