  • final gear breather

on top of the final gear there usetta-be a breather. up untill 5 minutes ago. any suggestions on how to repair it. its now a cone with a hole in the top instead of a cyclinder cap.

is it safe to "jb weld" the connecting surface areas?

and does the final gear filler hole tend to ooze oil? its not leaking from the drain, but there is residue of oil around the filler plug. it is tourqued down good, but oilly?

May have final drive overfilled. Fill to halfway up to bout whwre center of shaft would be. As for filler cap, wrap a little silicone tape on it, and snug it down....don't get too tight or it will be next to impossible to get loose. If you have stock airbox, hose goes from vent in gearbox to filter housing. If you runnin' individual air filters, there is a similar breather for the middle gear case.

next to impossable is right. ya i've got it extra oil in there. but the breather is in the final drive. its just a metal can on a cone. well maybe its something other than a breather?

No the final drive breather just had a cap over the cone. This would allow the air to move in and out, and keep the water out.
The oil level for the rear is about 2.5 cm below the bolt surface. This is a rough setting, but will keep you out of trouble and riding until you get a "dip stick" from Yamaha. The part # is 2H7-2815A-00-00.

How should the final drive breather cap be reattached?

Nomally, the cap is peened on to the cone before installation. That explains the hole in the top of the cone. The actual vent hole is down on the side of the cone. The passageway that actually vents the F/D is very small and long. I have taken an old final drive apart, and removed a vent cap from one also. The space inside the F/D is not a big open cavity, and the vent passageway actually begins at about the height of the axle. I wasn't too gentle removing the vent, but after I buggered up an F/D, I think I may have a good way to remove one. Use a propane torch and just heat around the hole the vent is presed into. It is not pressed in very far and should be easy to remove. To install it, all I did was put it in the freezer for a couple of minutes. Tapped right in. You could just pop rivit the cap back onto the cone, and paint it.

Mine just has a screw stuck in it. The cap is missing.

I also have another problem with the final drive. My drain bolt is stripped out. I went to change the fluid and the PO had, apparently stripped the threads and used thread lock to hold it in. Now that I have loosened it, it drips.
Nice day, if it doesn't rain...
