I'm installing one of the disposable paper filters in a clear plastic housing. It shouldn't matter if the hose dips down then up to the carbs should it? Will that cause an air lock? I would think that the pressure of the fuel in the tank would push right through that wouldn't it? How have others installed a filter?

Hey MPCluever,
A small loop should not cause you any fuel flow problems, they are just gravity feed carbs, and the pressure of the fuel from the tank above is usually plenty to push it thru the filter into the carbs. However, you might want to pull the line loose from the cabs, put it on PRIME, and let it run into a cup or such to ENSURE that the filter will flow at a decent rate, and not just a trickle.
Of course if PGGG chimes in, he'll tell you that fuel filters are BAD, but most of us prefer to use them instead of getting rust particles into our carbs, and have had NO ill effects from them! YMMV!

In over 20 years of turning wrenches on bike, I've never seen a case of vapor lock on a gravity feed fuel system.
I have put in line filters on every bike I've had since 1975 and the only problem I've seen is once in a while there is a routing problem that pinches the fuel line.

Air bubbles in a fuel filter is normal and a non-issue. Odds are there was a kink in the fuel line that was causing the problem. When adding an in-line filter you have to be careful about the fuel line routing.

The only problem I have ever had with inline filters is line routing. Otherwise, air in the filter is no problem. And, I am always amazed at how much fine crap they actually trap.Mike Giroir

That rusty coloured dust goes clean thru the floatvalve, thru the motor and out the exhaust. Any chunks bigger get jammed on the valves steel seive. My carbs are always clean with no gunk whatsoever inside. The original tank filter inside the tank it's a 78 tank, is pretty fine. What gets thru there never clogs the steel screen in the carb. This fuel down here is a soupy mess I'm sure it's the dregs from Oz, although over there petrol is pretty ****e quality too.
