White smoke and backfire

I bought my 80 XS1100SG a year ago for $300 and finally got it running last night. The first noticable problems I encountered was white smoke coming out of the left side exhaust and the right side exhaust backfiring. While starting up the bike I didn't have the airbox attached so I'm not sure if that would effect these problems.
