  • Speedometer cable XJ11

Hi, i broke my speedocable again, and now i buy a new one, not a used from ebay.

The problem is that parts for the XJ11 is very hard to find in Norway, its much easyer to find to an XS11. The question is, do the speedocable from XS fit XJ? I tried to search, but didnt find anything about that. The partfinder on Yamaha is down too.

The season has started here to now, after a long cold winter with a lot of snow. It was just wonderful to start her up again, and she start right up, no problem, but the speedocable broke after a week.

The speedo cable is part # 10M-83550-00-00 so it is specific to the XJ.

    Sorry

If they are the same, why would the part number start with 10M? I thought that meant specific to XJ only. There has to be a difference somewhere, maybe not making it incompatable but not the same. I can make just about anything work with a little enginuity. (I'm putting Goldwing hadr bags on my XJ) So you may be able to make it work. Maybe it is the way it hooks up to the gear at the hub of your front wheel?

As luck, or lack thereof would have it, I have just had a "bout" with my speedo/cables. On my 82 XJ, I went through 3, yes 3 speedo cables in less than 30 km's.

Long story short, I was forced to remove the instrument panel and speedo, clean it up and replace it.

Through the process I was able to acquire both OEM and after market cables. Obviously the OEM are for the XJ although I don't know what significant differences there would be as the aftermarket looked pretty much the same and it was applicable to both XS & XJ. The only difference I noticed was the inner cable on the aftermarket was a little longer but not to the detriment of anything.

PS - I would suggest that you save yourself some time, effort, money and perhaps some frustration........find out why your cable broke in the first place. If the speedo itself is gummed up with filings and crud, you may find yourself right back where you are now.

Yes, it could be the speedo. First time the cable broke, i replaced the cable and the speedometer. Since the bike is imported from usa the speedo was in miles, så i got one from candada in km/h.
Of course, the "new" speedo was old to, so i guess i have to open it up and clean and grease. I found tech-tips on that on this site. Think i practise on the one in miles first.

I will try to buy a cable to xs, thanks for helping me.
