  • M/C Snap ring boot

I'm trying to get a look at the front master cylinder assembly because my brakes are dragging even after rebuilding the calipers.

How can I get the boot off the plunger so that I can get to the snap ring?

I would like to preserve the boot and as much as possible so I don't need to purchase an m/c kit.

Well, pullin' and prayin' didn't help. The boot ripped apart and it looks like the snap ring is rusted in place. Any suggestions for removing the ring?

I pulled mine out yesterday. My boot came out fine but the ring was rusted. I used a very fine pointed screw driver and it poked down the back behind the end of the ring quite easily. Then once behind it I just ran the screwdriver right around behind the ring and it popped straight out. No damage either. Circlip inside that is worse.

sears sell these tiny yet longish needle nose pliers, on sale for 3 bucks, worked great for me, my dust boot is ripped too, i just cleaned it up and put it back on, stops great with the ss lines, did 300 miles with diverray, e liberty and planedick, it was a 1 day rally for me nice to have met some of the people who helped me get it together

            Mason,

It just happens that I had a pair of those long and thin needle nose pliers. I used them in combination with a pick and the snap ring popped out. Thanks.

Now does anybody have a relatively inexpensive source for m/c rebuild kits other than PNM or OBB? I don't need anything other than the kit and PNM doesn't take orders less than $35.

              hey man,

i learned that if the rubber parts look fine then all i did was soak the parts in c l r and watched it foam up,repeat, and fine grit in circular motion the bore and stuck a thin wire thru the spooge hole, washed everthing spotless as can be, painted, reasembled, and it was good, no money spent just alot of time, 4 or so hours?

                Thanks Mason,

That would work except that the first boot around the plunger was completely destroyed when I removed it.

Check out a guy called georgefix on e-bay. He has ALL sorts of rebuild kits for master cylinders and calipers as well. I got everything I needed for a complete rebuild of my 81 MS, except the rear master rebuild kit. He is excellent to work with and shipped my stuff quick. Tell him Russell told you to contact him. Hope this helps.

I have bought a few rebuild kits from Georgefix also, and have had good results.
