  • Are all exhaust the same?

I just had a conversation with a tech at MOTAD exhaust. He indicated their exhaust would fit ALL MODELS OF XS11.

That kind of makes sense. Aren't all the frames the same? The specs certainly indicate the wheelbases are all the same...

The standards, specials, and Maxim all had a wheelbase of 1545 mm according to the literature.

Except for the point where the silencer bolts to the frame (muffler hanger)... if a header will fit one it should fit all ...no?

    Thanks

    Cody,
The standard has a longer coller (sp?) on the header pipes. The difference is only about 1/4", but the studs in the heads are different. I think a properly built exhaust system should fit all the bikes. My headers fit well, but I think they have a coller about 1/8" shorter than a standard. With a gasket, there should be the extra room on both machines to make up for it.

Ok. Well the reason I was asking wasn't to try and put a Standard EOM or Special OEM on the Maxim ...but more to try and figure out how many exhausts are available to fit the Maxim.

      Thanks

Having parted out a couple of XJ's, I do know that the shape and style of the XJ exhaust headers is the same as the XS style, but the difference is in the mufflers. The Standard muffs are long, to the back of the rear tires, and they are basically paralell to the ground. The Special muffs have an upward slope to them, and are short, they end before the axle, and have a bell type of tip. The XJ has the same angle and the muffs are short also, but they are slash cut at the tips. I would believe the systems from a Special and XJ would swap out nicely.

Yes I'm sure. I figured the Special and Maxim were similar. I've had two Specials and one Maxim.

Even though the special exhaust won't fit a standard the opposite is not true...right? A standard exhaust should fit a special or Maxim...no?

It would fit, but the exhaust header pipe studs in the head might need to be replaced with longer ones, and the muffler bracket would need to be extended up to meet the footpeg/muffler mounting bracket. I personally don't care for the longer mufflers. I would think it would make rear wheel removal/installation a real PITA. When I put the spaghetti pipes on my Special, I got them off a Standard, and I had to replace the studs. They were too short for the collars.

Well I don't particularly like the look of a long muffler either. But I just bought one.

I just ordered a Motad 4-2-1 exhaust for Godzilla. The choices were so limited. It was either this exhaust or Jardine 4-1 or MAC 4-1.

The 4-2-1 design is supposed to develop power over a broad rpm range and thus flatten the powerband. The 4-1 design apparently develops power in a more "peaky" way.

Also the MAC and Jardines are too loud for my touring machine.

Of course being manufactured in the UK this system was not cheap primarily due to shipping charges. But I'm about to bite the big bullet and totally trick my Maxim power plant with a big bore, cams and head work. So what's another $600 for a top exhaust right?

Everything I've read about this header seems to indicate it flows like a river but is whisper quiet. Also it allows for a cooler and easy oil changes.

Here's some pics of our own Christian Raith's Eleven outfitted with the excellent Motad 4-2-1 system. His bike is very sharp as well.
