  • XS restoration HELP

    Hello everyone,

Im new here and new to bikes in general and just bought a 79 xs1100 special project bike. I need some help trying to get the thing running. First off i know my solonoid or my start switch is busted because the solonoid wont even click. second im not getting fire to the plugs. i tested the coils and after researching this some have decided they are bad, i dont get any voltage to the positive side of the coils unless i am turning the motor over. then i get 10-11v. any ideas on how i might be able to get this thing to start and then go from there? thanks for reading

    Voltage

I'd check the connections on the battery and fuse block first. Welcome to the site. Use the search button and dig around. The answers you seek are here or some one here knows as we have all been there. Good Luck

the fuse block has allready been rewired with inline fuse holders instead of using the block. the connections on the battery are good. thank you for the idea though

Did you ohm out the coils to make sure they are really dead? There's a procedure on here somewhere for testing them. Also, do a search for TCI repair. Randy here on the site has a link for testing and a solder fix for the TCI boxes.

The pickup coils on these beasts can also be suspect, as well as the carbs carbs carbs!!! (I say it 3 times cause they give 3 times the grief of most anything else on the bike. )

Like wing said, the answers to these and many more questions are all here somewhere and have all been answered many times. Also be sure to check out the tech tips on the left and Maintenence and Repair sections of the forums. They are all chock full of good info!!

well after a closer look at the coils thery are Dyna coils. and after removing them and testing them again they seem to be within the tolerances. one question though are the Dyna coils a 3 Ohm coil? if so then they are good but im still not getting fire to the plugs.

A bad wire to the pick up coils, or a bad ignition module can cause your symptoms. Check to make sure that the kill switch on the handlebar is in the run position.

did all that and its fine. I got the system to start working finally but the spark is week. However, i discovered my major problem is that the drive gear the starter/kickstart enguages is slipping and possibly missing some teath. it is grabbing and slipping BAD> so now i have to figure out if i can tear into it and see how bad the damage is.

Other things to check...ignition fuse, kill switch, tipover switch, shorted ballast resistor.
