  • Axle pinch bolt

I'm preparing to rebuild the rear brake caliper on my 80SG. The PO put 4 into 1's on my XS which I have to remove (drag--I just put them back on about 2 weeks ago) before I can remove the caliper. Do the 4 into 2's interfere with removal?

Also, Clymer's says to loosen the axle pinch bolt to get to the axle-----there is no pinch bolt on my bike. Is that by design or just missing?

On an 80SG, all you need to do is come in from the left side, above the final drive and using a phillips screwdriver, remove the screw on the back side of the caliper, that holds the brake pad in place. Then on the right side, just remove the bolt on the bottom of the caliper that secures it to the caliper bracket. remove the nut and bolt that holds the brake hose to the caliper bracket. The caliper will just lift straight up. The exhaust should not be in the way. There will be a pinch bolt where the axle goes through the frame on the right side. The axle nut will be on the left, but I don't know of any reason to loosen the axle if you are not removing the caliper bracket.

        Halleluah!

        That's good news John,

Clymer's would have me removing the axle.

Should I be concerned that I don't have a pinch bolt or spacer?

Well, I would be. Are you sure there is no bolt in the very rear of the frame that would pinch on the axle? Other than the caliper mount, there is the torque stopper plate, and one small spacer that sits in the seal on the right side of the wheel.

Yep I'm sure. No bolt, no spacer.

Can you post a picture of the right side where the pinch bolt should be?

Here's a shot of the pinch bolt from a 79SF, rather rusty!!

The photo was actually to show the wasp nest in the muffler!

Would you call that a Stinger exhaust?

As soon as I get to a photodump account I'll get a pic on here. I did remove the caliper just as you described John. That was real sweet!

Only problem was my piston was severely pitted so I had to order a new one. SWMBO thinks my XS is turning into a money pit. She's convinced I'm making up all these problems that need fixing.

What is that special paint that's used on calipers?

                        Missing pinch bolt

I finally got an image hosting site. So here is a pic of my missing pinch bolt. I think I'm also missing a spacer. Can someone verify that for me.

Your spacer is right there, it's part of the dust cover over the bearing, there's just a gap between the brake arm and the swing arm cause the swing arm has slide outwards along the larger end of the axle, there is a lip/edge right there and that is what it keeping the brake mount from moving any further outwards!

                            Re: Missing pinch bolt

I am thinking that you should get a bolt because the "pincher" is there without a bolt. If the thing is stripped, put a nut on a bolt or helicoil the threads. I think the frame will form a gap like that if the pinch mechanism has no restraint to the diameter at all when you are torquing the big nut on the other end of the shaft. Right???

                              Skids,
The pinch bolt must be LOOSE when you tighten the axle nut. The pinch bolt is the last thing tightened. I did have one "go away" on me, so it can happen if the shop forgets to tighten it.
